Dear Newsgroup ~

This past week I came across the following charter from King Henry III
to Sir Alan Basset (husband of Aline de Gay) dated 1230. I thought
everyone might enjoy seeing a transcript of it.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

But you haven't come across a "charter" and you haven't shown everyone a
"transcript" of such a document. What you posted is a summary, merely a
notice from a calendar of records, that happens to include a transcript of
just a small fraction of the charter in question.

Surely you can work that out, as the relevant terms are in English.

Dear Mr. Stewart ~

Let get even more specific. I posted a transcript of an English
summary of a Latin charter. How's that?

That's elementary, hardly pettifogging as you now seek to imply.

A scholar should not misrepresent his sources under ANY circumstances.

Your first description wasn't somehow "less specific" than the revision, it
was flatly wrong. And, as of course you know, misleading to anyone who is
not a trained historian or otherwise familiar with proper standards in this
field of study.

You like me, Peter. Admit it.

When it comes to medieval genealogy, I like the truth and facts. And so
when, all too rarely, you offer these, I like the result.

I would certainly MUCH prefer not to have to criticise you, but until you
pick up your standards I will continue.
