Error in Medieval Ancestry of Prince William of Wales

It can take quite some time to catch up with errors or new found information.

Europaischen Stammtafeln Band IV
by Frank Baron Freytag von Loringhoven, Tafel 43
Here we find Everwin I Count von Bentheim, 1397-1454, he is married to (1) Mechtild von Steinfurt and (2) Gisberta van Bronckhorst. He has three children indicated all three to be by his first wife.

These numbers may not be correct, perhaps Ian Fettes or John Higgins can correct me.

I have Everwin as ancestor of Prince William 125 times. And his lines go via all three children:
Lutgardis 86 times
Bernhard 23 times
Arnold 16 times

By accident I found that the two sons are by the second wife, not the first.
Cahiers de Saint Louis page 321 confirms this as does ES Schwennicke Volume IV Tafel 43.

Sadly Gerald Paget in his book on the ancestors of Prince Charles has it wrong in two places. Q897 is wrong and so is Q11549.

With Gisberta van Bronckhorst becoming an ancestor 39 times her ancestry becomes interesting as well.
For Everwin I have 2601 ancestors
for Mechtild von Steinfurt I have 1713 ancestors
for Gisberta van Bronckhorst I have 1645 ancestors.

At the moment I have 37,287 ancestors for Prince William which is far below what Ian Fettes and John Higgins have. At this moment Mechtild von Steinfurt is still marked off in Genealogics as the mother of all three children but with the next update that will change.
Best wishes

Leo:

I agree with your reading of this correction to the marriages and children
of Everwin I, Graf von Bentheim, but with one small note. The citation to
Schwennicke's ESNF, which has the apparently correct version of the family,
should be to page 1 of vol. 4, not p. 43.

Paget no doubt followed the old ES. It's worth mentioning that Paget also
erred in saying that Mechtild was daughter of Baldwin von Steinfurt, whereas
ESNF says she was dau. of Ludolf VIII. Your database has this right, as
does Ian's.

And I agree that all three children of Everwin I are ancestors of Prince
William - although I can't count the lines of descent as easily as you can!
:-)
