Dear Newsgroup ~

Before we plunge ahead with a full throttle discussion of the ancestry
of Aline de Gay, wife of Sir Alan Basset (died 1232), I believe it
would be worthwhile if we first examined Aline and Alan Basset's known
descendants for the first six or so generations. Perhaps the easiest
way to do this would be for people to post their own lines of descents
from the Gay-Basset family down to their immigrant Gateway ancestors.
If there is a problem area in the descent, it can then be spotted and
fixed. Several newsgroup members have already posted their lines of
descent and a couple of corrections/additions have since come forward.
I believe if we share data, we all benefit from the process.

As an aside, I've looked at several online databases regarding the
Gay-Basset family. The database which seems to be the most accurate
record of Gay-Basset descendants is Jim Weber's database.

For those who wish to consult the Weber database, they may do so at the
following address:

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb. ... er&recno=0

Newsgroup members may also wish to consult Hal Bradley's good database
which can be found at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... index2.htm

These two websites should help anyone who is trying to develop a line
of descent from the Basset-Gay family.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Newsgroup ~

These two websites should help anyone who is trying to develop a line
of descent from the Basset-Gay family.

I don't know what process is invloved in "developing" lines of descent,
rather than, say, "discovering" these - but I suppose it means filling in
details for the individuals involved.

If so, both of the websites proposed by Richardson had best be avoided. Both
attribute either definite or approximate birthdates and/or places for each
person with no attempt to give a source in many instances, or a better one
than Burke's Peerage in others. Estimates like this, and assuming that any
child must have been born in its parents' likeliest place of residence, make
for absurdities & false confidence.

This is genealogy of a kindergarten variety, not fit for sensible adults who
want to know something about their ancestors.

Much better to stick with Leo's Genealogics website, a resource much used by
Jim Weber as we know.

Hello to all from an interested novice at medieval genealogy research,

I've been following this discussion with some interest since it began, but
only now have found the time to submit my apparent lines of descent. I had
a hard time locating the right lines in my compilation of charts [962
4-generation charts trying to trace the ancestry of William FARRAR,
occupying 3+ looseleaf binders] -- only to realize that my BASSET(T)-GAY/GAI
lineage was actually a gap in all those pages. 8-(

So, I'll have to start with what I HAVE written down and ask someone to help
me fill in the ancestry part since I got a little lost trying to follow the
discussion earlier.

Here it is:

Line 1 [going from oldest to youngest generation(s)]:

1. Philip Basset md. Hawise de Lovaine
2. Aline (Aliva?) Basset md. Hugh le Despenser
3. Hugh le Despenser md. Isabel de Beauchamp
4. Isabel le Despenser md. John de Hastings
5. Hugh de Hastings md. Margery de Foliot
6. Hugh de Hastings md. Margaret de Everingham
7. Hugh de Hastings md. Anne le Despenser
8. Edward (de) Hastings md. Muriel de Dinham
9. John Hastings, Lord Hastings, md. Anne Morley
10. Elizabeth Hastings md. (Sir) Robert Hildyard
11. Katherine Hildyard md. William Girlington
12. Isabel Girlington md. Christopher Kelke

Line 2:

1. Same as #1 above
2. Same as #2 above
3. Anne le Despenser md. Sir William de Ferrers
4. William de Ferrers md. Ellen de Segrave
5. Anne de Ferrers md. Edward le Despenser
6. Edward le Despenser md. Elizabeth Burghersh
7. Anne le Despenser md. Hugh de Hastings
8. Edward de Hastings md. Muriel de Dinham
9. Same as #9 above
10. Same as #10 above
11. Same as #11 above
12. Same as #12 above

I HOPE I have entered everything correctly, and I SUSPECT I have other ties
to the same lineage, but haven't found them in all my charts yet.

Also, my information came ONLY from Plantagenet Ancestry, CP, at least some
of Gary Boyd Roberts' books, Genealogics.org, and from info supplied to me
by John Ravilious via email. I look forward to hearing from those on this
group who can straighten me out on Philip and Aline Basset's ancestry, as
well as pointing out mistakes I might have made. Also, if anybody [John?]
knows of other links I may have to that family, I look forward to receiving
that information, too.

Best wishes,

Richard Anderson in Danville, Virginia

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed already (I've been an
inattentive reader of late). Has there been an attempt made at listing
17th century American "gateways" back to Aline de Gay?

Thanks.
