Stewart of Horn Head

John Ravilious in a posting to this group 4/29/2005 titled "SP Correction:
Ancestry of Stewart, Earl of Galloway" got me thinking again of an old
problem.

Capt. Charles Stewart, son of Alexander Stewart, Esq., of Ballymore, Co.
Donegal, purchased the estate of Horn Head, co. Donegal in 1700, and was High
Sheriff in 1707. Capt. Stewart bore Arms--Quarterly: 1st and 4th az., three
fleurs-de-lis within a bordure engrailed or; 2nd and 3rd or, a fesse chequy az.
and arg., within a bordure gu., charged with eight round buckles tongues
fessways, of the first, over all in the centre chief point a mullet
counterchanged. Crest--Out of a ducal coronet or, a bull's head sa., vomiting flames ppr.
and charged on the neck with mullet or. Motto--Avant Darnley.

These arms and the motto strongly suggest that the gentry Stewart family
formerly (sold 1934) of Horn Head descend from Sir John Stewart of Derneley,
created Lord of Aubigny in France and killed 1429 at siege of Orleans. According
to tradition that descent is through Stewart of Raiss, Renfrewshire, but I
can't make the connection. AND, THAT'S THE PROBLEM.

I'd be most grateful if anyone in this group can help me connect Capt.
Charles Stewart (c.1662-1740) back to Sir John Stewart of Derneley (-1429).
