Crane of Newton Toney

Does anyone have any info on the ancestry of the Thomas Crane of
Newton Toney, Wiltshire, whose daughter Frances was mother to
Elizabeth Bourchier, (Lord Protector) Oliver Cromwell's wife? Another
daughter, Eluzai Crane, b. 1586, married Cromwell's uncle, Henry
Cromwell, and was mother to Elizabeth Cromwell, second wife of Oliver
St John, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas.

Antonia Fraser describes Frances Crane as "a Suffolk lady" in her
biography "Cromwell, Our Chief of Men". Perhaps there's a connection
to the Cranes of Chilton.

Thanks,

Mark

There is no additional information in this other than to confirm what
you have found but in 1884 there was an article in the Transactions of
the Essex Archaeological Society, pp. 202-208 of Volume II of the new
Series, on that Bourchier family.

It so happens that I transcribed that article and it can be found at
the foot of this page:

You should grab both the Bourchier History and the Bourchier Tree
files.

It may give you a lead. The Craines are also mentioned in the Essex
1634 visitation in the Bourchier pedigree on p. 354.

Thanks, Tim, it's an interesting article. I'll see if I can find
anything on the Cranes at the Society of Genealogists library when I
get a chance.
