OT: Dissolution of the monastaries

Legg inn av Gjest » 29 apr 2005 01:49:45

Greetings all,

I know this is a few years outside the realm of our time-frame; sorry.

Is there somewhere a consolodated record of the lay commissioners who
were called upon to carry out Great Harry's taxations and ultimate
dissolutions of the monastic houses in the 1530s?

I ask, because I am working on something regarding George Butler of
Sharnbrook in Bedfordshire. He was granted the Tofte Manor in
Sharnbrook after the dissolution, and went on to acquire two more
manors within a couple of years, setting up his heirs very hansomely.

It is my understanding that many agents of the crown during the
dissolution were the very local gentry who obtained the monastic lands
when Henry sold them off, and I'd love to know if George was one of
the commissioners. It would make sense, though I've never seen it
referred to.

If anyone has any lead on such, do let me know! Thanks!

Cheers,
Jon Stallard
