Scholars and Gentleman
Excuse, if you will, an old untutored student of family history, but one
feels compelled to comment on the degree of ungentlemanly name calling
on GEN-MED. It detracts from the enjoyment of discovery as one reads.
Perhaps those who appear as respected authorities in research could be
enjoined to do their name calling off site.
Respecfully,
Joseph Edward de Vicq (de Cumptich),
with a distant deVicq at the walls of Constantinople in 1204
feels compelled to comment on the degree of ungentlemanly name calling

Re: Scholars and Gentleman
Many of us can trace ourselves to both sides of the Fourth Crusade,
mentioned below.
Most of us can trace ourselve from ladies and gentlemen, of whatever social
rank, and from scoundrels. We are not responsible for our ancestors'
behaviors -- we are, however, responsible for our own behaviour, and for
how we raise and set examples for future generations.
It would be better if all of us scholars here tried harder also to be
ladies and gentlemen. This does not mean we shouldn't criticize, but
criticism should be directed primarily at data, hypotheses, theories and
conclusions, rather than at other scholars. Occasionally it may be useful
also to criticize other scholars, as indeed I am doing now, but this can
generally be accomplished without using nasty terminology.
Despite this, it's better to have the scholarship with the ill behaviour,
than not to have the scholarship. My continued thanks to all the scholars
here from whom I learn (and "scholar" means productive contributor, not a
pile of degrees or publications.)

Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary. Take your pick.
I could also have called Richardson dishonest, or at least deceptive. When
making a criticism you have to make sure that your criticism is correct and
not open to misinterpretation.
"In summary, Leo's database comes a cropper. Missing individuals, misspelled
surnames (Le Despencer for le Despenser, Bassett for Basset), the use of
Latin forms of given names (Aliva for Alina), and inconsistency regarding
spelling."
Sounds clear enough? But is it? It leaves no room for interpretation? Well,
I do have 62 Basset and 37 Bassett in my database. Inconsistent, or is it
correct reportage from my original sources? Does Richardson's book become a
cropper when _for some lines_ the sources mentioned do not provide the
information he claims he has extracted from those sources? Missing
individuals? Have I anywhere claimed to have _all medieval people_ on my
website or _all_ of any other period or family?
Is it _Name Calling_ or was it an attempt at a correct description?
Best wishes

I didn't see the post of Richardson that this quote is taken from - but if
he suggested that "Aliva" is a Latin form of "Alina" he is coming a cropper
of his own: in this case, "Alina" is the Latin form of the Anglo-Norman
vernacular "Aline", while "Aliva" was apparently a misreading on someone's
part.
Yesterday I posted a brief extract from the charter of Alina de Gai's
husband that gave her family name and used the form "Alina" for her given
name - maybe Richardson was not even aware that this was written in Latin.

Simple & straightforward, nobody's "issue" at all.
As for laughing your posterior "off", I still don't know what this can mean.
Do you imagine that such a witless response will stop people thinking that
Richardson is a smarmy hypocrite for complaining about name-calling only
when he is on the receiving end?
Whether or not there is a person named "Mike Welch" is neither here nor

Part of being collegial is being honest, start being honest in your
approach, at present, or better for a very long time, your behaviour invites
"descriptions" and if they appear not to be nice there is only one person to
blame. I have shown that my choice of the word fool was not meant to be
insulting but as a word with a proper meaning, and, sorry, I believe the

Re: Scholars and Gentleman
Dear Tony,
I had to object to Douglas Richardson's petty assessment of one small aspect
of my data base. To maintain my data base "comes a cropper" because of the
spelling of two surnames (again 62 Basset according to Richardson are
spelled correctly against 37 not)
and the lacking of people _he thinks_ should be there, seems overkill to me.
If the same approach was used against his book, how much more should that be
described as a cropper? Hasn't there been complaints also that his book
about Gateway Ancestors misses out almost totally on those from Scotland?
Then his complaint that I called him a fool, apparently thinking I intended
to insult him, sorry if I had intended to insult him I would have taken the
Australian expression and called him a bloody fool.
What I said needed to be said. If not it would seem that I agreed with
Richardson and that he was correct. He addesses only his _injured feelings_
and cannot be bothered replying to my other remarks. When I copy information
from sources, I try to copy as correctly as possible and if the same name
appears elsewhere with a different spelling that is just bad luck,
Richardson cope with that........Sometimes in one source the same name gets
two spellings----which one to choose? Poor Richardson.

Re: Scholars And Gentlemen & Ladies
What these "comics" Richardson and Hines gleefully overlook is the insults
by both of them directed at me. The callous dismissal of a whole data base
because of some personal disagreements of Richardson certainly is grossly
offensive. This, of course, is sanctimoniously overlooked by Richardson and
his admiring toadies.
The offensive behaviour by Hines, which is why I stopped communicating with
him is simply because of his offensive insistance that I _must_ justify a
book published in 1991 by Melvyn Fairclough. Because I mentioned the book _I
must agree with it_ and therefor_ I must know all the ins and outs_ seems to
be Hines' attitude. This is blatantly stupid, I cannot be bothered
communicating with him any longer.
Best wishes

Classic!
Abbott [Stewart] now joins Costello [Leo] in the act.
Yes, we needed a good straight man.
Everyone knows, of course, that Peter Stewart and I are the same
person -- that's very old news.
Yes, Spencer - almost as stale as your dreary attempt at humour about it.
Leo is not mocked - his generosity in making his excellent database
available online is vastly more impressive than the absurd egotism of
Richardon in proposing himself as the ultimate expert on English medieval
and colonial "gateway" genealogy. He still hasn't answered my
straightforward request for proof on the Basset-Gay/Gray business or
questions on his criticism of CP regarding Isabel Booth.

Dear Leo ~
It is not necessary to call newsgroup members "toadies." You insult
everyone by your choice of words. Please refrain from name calling.
If you are unable to control yourself, I suggest you find another
newsgroup.

Sometimes in one source the same name gets
two spellings----which one to choose?
in such cases, flip a coin... :

Your spelling continues to amaze, compared to the deliberately
blundering

Why was that, do you suppose?

No, this doesn't begin to answer the case - take another look at your early
ham-fisted attempts to look like an honest & independent bumpkin under the
name "Mike Welch".
If you find this too hard, some examples will have to be dredged up from the
archive to compare to the newer efforts. Spell-checking has nothing to do
with this - Welch has not achieved an artifical perfection, just a revealing
improvement from extremely crude spelling to better results.

Well fine and dandy. Glad we got that behind us.
Now about Peter's delusion that Mike and I are the same person? Mmmmm
..... someone quick call the ambulance.

Perhaps the ambulance driver will be able to explain how it is that you
are so blandly confident about Mike Welch's "new spell checker". Did he
write to tell you about this off-list, or is ESP at work in another
glimpse of the symbiosis between you & a stooge?
The trouble is that Welch's spelling earlier on was so bad that he
could not possibly be literate enough to undertake genealogical
research as he claimed to do.
Once again you seem to imagine that your arbitrarily twisted statements
are accepted by SGM readers as sure & unquestionable evidence of
whatever you want us to believe.
I hope the ambulance when it comes is well stocked with medicaments for
this strange condition.
