To whom it may concern:
Here is a gateway ancestry that I do not see listed in books.
I encourage any and all to pop holes in it! I would like to see if there is
a problem. To my knowledge there is not one.

Ray,

The interesting Combs website at

http://www.combs-families.org/combs/fam ... -arch1.htm

has well-presented discussions of the first four of these generations,
as you've obviously already read. I would put this line in a 'certainly
probable and not implausible' category. I'm willing to accept that the
Old Rappahannock County man has got to be grandson of John and Margaret
(Archdale) Combe, and it is certainly tempting to accept him as the son
of that name of John & Eliz. Lovett Combe, a draper's apprentice who
disappears after 1656. I didn't read everything on the site about
Blount - Saunders - Lovett, but those generations may well hold water,
though the site suggests that it is not all cut and dried even above the
immigrant generation.

By the way, I haven't looked closely at the Blounts of Sodington,
Kinlet, Osbaston, etc. (descended from a brother of Sancha de Ayala's
husband). One website,

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... OUNT.shtml

gives them quite a lot of colonial immigrant descendants. Do any of
these bear critical inspection, or are they placed on this family on a
name's-the-same, wishful-thinking basis?

I notice that the Combs webpage above mentions a "Mary Cammock, d/o
Warwick and Margaret (Williams ?) (Thatcher) Cammock."

I know there was a Cammock family with tenuous ties to New England, one
of whose members married a lady from the Rich family (related to Robert
Rich, Earl of Warwick).

Wouldn't this Warwick Cammock likely be a member of that family?

(Not that this has anything to do with Combses and Archdales ...
Sorry.)

More off-topic stuff, but I notice that the Combs website has two
excerpts pertaining to John Gifford of Lynn and Boston:

14 December 1668. Lord Mayor's court of London. William WILSON of
Southwark, Surrey, gent., age 50, and John COX of London, citizen and
merchant tailor, age 30, depose at the request of Robert MORRES of
London, citizen and skinner that Ezechiel FOGG of London, citizen and
skinner, and John GIFFORD of Boston, New England, merchant, by deed 11
September 1667 became bound to Robert MORRIS in respect of goods
exported to New England. 25 October 1676. Richard STONEHILL of London,
notary public, age 28, deposes at the request of John WRIGHT, Esq., of
Wrightsbridge, Essex, that John GIFFORD of New England, merchant,
signed a deed 4 June 1673 to the use of the requestant. The deed bound
the parties to observe the conditions of an agreement of the same
date, between John GIFFORD, Sir Richard COMBE, John WRIGHT, Francis
ALLEN, John GODFREY, John WILLIAMS, John EATON, and Ezechiel FOGG.
