In a recent post Will Johnson wrote: "in general people posting to
wide-open public lists like this are in a sense inherently giving up their
claim to copyright those posts. It's sort of like being overheard at a
cocktail party. You can't claim it was private, priviledged speech when
you're saying it in public."

This confuses two nearly opposite concepts. Copyright was designed for
information made public, to protect the author's rights to re-use and
profit from the material. Posting a message makes it public and
constitutes publication. You should have no expectation of it being
private. You should have every expectation that it will be re-used by
others only in accordance with the copyright laws, or with your permission.
