According to Sturdza [1983], Theodora, the wife of Byzantine emperor
Michael VIII Palaeologus, who reigned 1259 - 1282, was "f. de Jean DUKAS et
d'une fille de l'empereur Jean II Dukas Vatatzes", however, according to
Wagner [1975], she was "dau. of John Vatatzes".
Does anyone have further information, or know the potential historical
sources? Thanks.

Sturdza probably corrected this in the second edition of his work: she was
daughter of Ioannes Doukas, a member of the Batatzes family as son of the
sebastokrator Isaakios Doukas, brother of Ioannes Doukas Batatzes, emperor
in Nicaea. Theodora was the only child of her father, who died when she was
still a girl. Her paternal great-uncle (not maternal grandfather) Ioannes is
stated to have "loved her like a daughter", and he arranged her marriage to
Michael Palaiologos.

Palaiologina, Wife of Michael VIII' in _Homo byzantinus: Papers in Honor of

Thanks very much Peter. Would you happen to have comments on the parentage
of the brothers Isaakios & Ioannes?

I haven't anything original or useful to add on this subject - there is a
discussion of alternative hypotheses in John S. Langdon's 'Backgrounds to
the Rise of the Vatatzai to Prominence in the Byzantine "Oikoumene",
997-1222', _To Hellenikon: Studies in Honor of Speros Vryonis, Jr_, edited
by JS Langdon et al, 2 vols (New Rochelle, 1993) I 179-211.
