William FitzNorman

Hi All,

I'm both new to this list and new to medieval genealogy so please excuse my
naivety.

I am Frank Baynham and recently traced my ancestry back to Ralph Ap Eynon
born 1306 and via his wife Joane De Dene to William FitzNorman. I live in
the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire and although I was born in Lancashire
it's great to be able to say I've nearly 1000 years of ancestry here.

I believe William FitzNorman was born in 1048 and would suspect that he came
over with William 1 in 1066, or soon after. His son is given as Ulric De
Dene and obviously that line of the family founded the dynasty which linked
via Joan De Dene with my Ap Eynon ancestors who later became Baynham.

Where did William FitzNorman originate and who were his family?

Where did Ralph Ap Eynon come from?

I would welcome any guidance on where to look next.

Regards to all,

In Keats-Rohan's "Domesday People" page 487 she writes:

"Willelm Filius Normanni
"Norman, tenant-in-chief in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, where
he was a forester associated with the forest of Dean. He was
succeeded by his son Hugh fitz William, sometimes known as Hugh of
Kilpeck, from the family's chief holding. A William fitz Norman
occurs in an eleventh century charter of Sainte-Trinité de Rouen
granting land at Requiercourt, doyenné de Baudemont."

And in the successor volume "Domesday Descendants" on page 976 she
writes:

"Filius Willelmi Forestarii, Hugo
"Son of William fitz Norman the forester of Kilpeck, whom he had
succeeded by 1127. He died in August 1158 leaving a son Henry of
Kilpeck. Benefactor of St Peter's Gloucester."

She includes a few references and charters and I would recommend that
you have a look at these and follow them up. Curiously I cannot find
his son Ulric de Dene in either Domesday People or her successor book
Domesday Descendants.

Where did William FitzNorman originate and who were his family?

Where did Ralph Ap Eynon come from?

Usually the Victoria County Histories (K-R lists VCH Herefords Vol I, p.
336) are a very good start; you should find them in "any good library",
but it is worth a phone call to see if they have the counties, and
hundreds, you are interested in before making a journey.

For people who came over with William the Conqueror, the best book is
"My Ancestors came over with William the Conqueror" by Anthony J Camp
