Descendants of Margaret (Barrett) Huntington of Connecticut might be
interested in the following tidbit, ca. 1636, concerning her father,
sometime Mayor of Norwich:

By reason that there be many seates over our heads wee are oftentymes
exposed to much danger as alsoe to have many scornes and contempts
(vizt) as in the maioralty of Mr Christofer Barrett a great bible was
lett fall from above and missed very litle of hitting him upon the head
& broke his spectacles ... And not long before the tyme of Mr Barretts
maioralty some made water in the gallery over the Aldermens heads and
dropt downe into their wifes seats who sate close att their backs ...
That in the tyme of the present maior that now is upon that Sunday the
day before the knights of the shire was chosen in October last Alderman
Shipdham justice of peace and sitting next the maior some body most
beastly did conspurcate and shitt upon his gowne from the galleryes
above. And the Sonday imediately after some from the galloryes lett
fall a shooe which narrowly missed the maior's head And att another
tyme one from the said gallery did spitt upon Alderman Barrett's head.

You're welcome, Douglas. Are you a Barrett-Huntington descendant by
any chance? It's one of my lines, and I think John Steele Gordon is
descended, as well.

I am indeed:

Christopher Barrett = Elizabeth Clarke
Margaret Barrett = Simon Huntington
Simon Huntington = Sarah Clark
Simon Huntington = Lydia Gager
Joshua Huntington = Hannah Perkins
Jabez Huntington = Elizabeth Backus
Jedidiah Huntington = Ann Moore
Ann Huntington = Peter Richards
Hannah Richards = Ephraim Lyman
Hart Lyman = Marion Torrey
Katharine Lyman = John Nelson Steele
Mary Alricks Steele = Richard Haden Gordon

Franklin Roosevelt is a descendant of Joshua Huntington and Hannah Perkins,
so he, too, is a descendant of Christopher Barrett. I hope he was grateful
for the fact that as a politician he was only dumped on metaphorically, not
literally, as his esteemed ancestor was.

I think Pres. Grant was a descendant, as well.

For what it's worth, Christopher Barrett's step-father and -brother,
Robert and John Suckling, are covered in _The History of Parliament:
House of Commons, 1558-1603_.

I have two lines, down through Huntington, Rockwell, Eaton (who married
a cousin and removed from Connecticut to Nova Scotia), Cox (removed to
Massachusetts), Porter (removed to Illinois), Macy, and Brandon.

FDR

It's a nice little coincidence that FDR and I both have maternal
grandmothers named Catherine (Katharine) Lyman. However my grandmother was
much more closely related to FDR through the Huntingtons (4th cousins) than
through the Lymans (7th cousins). I doubt she knew of the relationship but
would certainly have been horrified if she did.

Christopher Barrett's mother, Margaret Petingale (not Petishall as
often reported), had quite the interesting life. She was married four
times, the first of her husbands being William Wingfield, the former
Prior of the dissolved Priory of Castle Acre in Norfolk. NEHGR,
110:312, gives the following account (written sometime in the 1600s)
....

William the Eldest sonn of the foresaid Wm Baret married Jane the
daughter of Willm Claxton of Halesworth in suffolk by whome he had
Issue and all dyed without Issue his 2d wife was Margaret the Widdow
of Winkfield Abbot [sic] of Castle Acre in Northfolke by whom he had
Owen & Christopher & one daughter Prudence all which were borne to him
in Westen hall or Westall in suff. The said William deceased the 11th
of March 1565.
Christopher being verry young when his Father dyed was by his
mother Margaret (whoe afterwards married to Ald[erman] Suckling of
Norwich) brought to Norwich & by his Father in Law Sucklinge bound out
an Aprentice to London ...

For more on the story of Margaret Petingale and William Wingfield, see
the article by Geoffrey Baskerville, "Married Clergy and Pensioned
Religious in Norwich Diocese, 1555," in the _English Historical
Review_, vol. 48 (1933).

Me Too.

My line of descent from mayor Barrett is as follows:

Christopher Barrett and Elizabeth Clark were parents of Margaret Barrett
[1595 Sep 29 - 1661 Mar 25], who married Simon Huntington.
They were parents of Thomas Huntington [1632/3 - 1685-9], who married
Hannah Crane.
They were parents of Samuel Huntington [1663 - 1708], who married Sarah
Sargeant.
They were parents of Simon Huntington [1696 - 1770 Jul 17], who married
Thankful (maiden surname unknown).
They were parents of Phebe Ruth Huntington [1731 - 1801], who married
Gershom Gard.
They were parents of Eunice "Betsey" Gard [1770-1 - 1857 Apr 11], who
married captain Ephraim Brown.
They were parents of Caroline Brown [1813 Sep 12 - 1900 Apr 15], who
married Godfrey Vanscoyoc.
They were parents of Stephen Mandreville Vanscoyoc [1839 Aug 12 - 1912 Nov
14], who married Jane Brenton.
They were parents of Eliza Caroline Vanscoyoc [1873 Nov 19 - 1948 Jul 29],
who married William Carter Parks.
They were parents of Pauline Ardath Parks [1902 Nov 14 - 1995 Apr 06], who
married Donald Charles Hills.
They were my maternal grandparents.

[Only the first two couples are properly medieval. Thanks for your
indulgence to my posting the remainder of the line. If, by any chance, any
of you share the early part of this line and have discovered the maiden
surname of "Thankful", I would be quite please to hear from you. (Caution:
I believe there is another Huntington wife also named "Thankful".)]

I'm afraid I made a thorough hash of FDR's descent from Joshua Huntington. I
took it from the ahnentafel in Gary Boyd Roberts's Ancestors of American
Presidents and got it, well, totally wrong, reorganizing the marriage
alliances of FDR's ancestors to a fare-thee-well. Being ambidextrous (or
more accurately, as my brother once suggested, ambiclumsy) I have always had
a hard time telling left from right. Evidently I have equal trouble telling
up from down.

My thanks to James Cummings for alerting me to my folly.

Here, I hope, is the correct descent:

Joshua Huntington = Hannah Perkins
Lydia Huntington = Ephraim Bill
Lydia Bill = Joseph Howland
Susan Howland = John Aspinwall
Mary Rebecca Aspinwall = Isaac Roosevelt
James Roosevelt = Sarah Delano
FDR

(Anyone want to take bets on how long it takes Hines, after reading this, to
post one of his strutting-rooster imitations?)

You're welcome. But, to be understood, you might have to say
"conspurcate and shitt" (as that writer did)!
