Property inherited by the heiress

Richard Holmes "The Chartulary of St John of
Pontefract" made an interesting observation regarding
the fate of property inherited by the heiress:

" There were several distinct methods of treating
properties such as the ancient demsne, when an heiress
brought them into another name. If she married a man
of standing rather lower than her own, or who had an
inferior property, her manor naturally became the
chief manor of the joint estate, and its importance
enhanced. If, however, the husband were of an equal
position, or of a higher grade and with exalted
expectations, the lady's property was the less likely
to become the seat of a head house, but was always
liable to be broken up into sub divisions."

He was referring to Ledsham Charter 229 Peter de Brus
and his wife Joan. Apparantly the boundaries of
properties mentioned in that Charter 1200 still can be
traced by the same hedges!

Sincerely Yours,
