Apology to John Steele Gordon

It has sunk in, at last, what my problem with John is.
I spoke of genealogical fact
whereas John spoke of language fact
and, obviously, they do not mean the same thing. I do realise, at last, what he means by collateral ancestor, but I do not understand the meaning of direct.

OED says father to son, but John says _they don't mean that_ I think we should leave it there.
Best wishes and thanks for the language lesson.

I think John is saying that the OED says "father to son" but means "parent
to child," in much the same way that a 1950's employee training manual might
say "the customer should be greeted when he walks in the door" but would
mean that both men and women should be greeted. In the latter case, having
"he" include women is one way that "the male embraces the female."
