Dear Nat Taylor:

Thank you very much for your explanation. It is an
excellent reminder that I need to educate myself.
Languages change like the wind.

Sincerely Yours,

Languages change like the wind.

But not archaic languages, such as Latin - in this case, for obvious reasons
there was no classical word for "godson", so that the diminutive "filiolus"
was adopted for the meaning. That's not exactly changing like the wind,
although maybe bending slightly with it.

Recently, there was discussion here of the Cholmondeleys of Cheshire, UK. A
2001 talk given by professor Eric Ives to the UK reunion of the worldwide
Brereton family provides this source for researchers:

The family tree of the Cholmondley (a.k.a. Chumley) can be found at the
Cheshire (UK) records Office. The reference is DDX 95.

Apparently the Brereton family in Cheshire morphed into the Cholmondleys. I
am guessing that this occurred with the marriage of Elizabeth Brereton,
daughter of Sir Randall (knighted 1544), in the 16th century, and/or with
the second marriage of Mary (Nee Griffifths aka Gruffydd of Penrhyn), widow
of another Sir Randall (there were seven) toSheriff/Sir Hugh Brereton, d.
1596/9.

Sorry about putting the Cholmondley information under the "latin
Translation" subject.
