thanks to everyone who answered. The translation
answered the question of who he left the money to. Now
to find which Thomas St. Leger was living in 1444.

Dear Charlotte ~

My guess is that the reference in the 1444 will you have quoted is to
Thomas St. Leger, Knt., of Guildford, Artington, Claygate (in Ash),
Field Place and Down Place (both in Compton), Surrey, Esquire and
Knight of the body to King Edward IV, controller, changer, and assayer
of the mint and coinage within the Tower of London, Master of the Hart
Hounds, Knight of the Shire for Surrey, Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex,
son of John Saint Leger, of Ulcombe, Kent, by Margery, daughter and
heiress of James Donet, of Sileham (in Rainham), Kent.

Thomas St. Leger was the 2nd husband of Anne Plantagenet, sister of
Kings Edward IV and Richard III of England. In 1465 he was pardoned
for striking the marshal of the hall at Westminster. He went with the
King's army to France in 1475 with 20 men at arms and 200 archers in
his retinue. He was present at the funeral of King Edward IV in 1483.
He was the chief instigator of the Buckingham rising in Surrey against
King Richard II in 1483. He was taken at Torrington and beheaded at
Exeter, Devon 12 Nov. 1483.

Further information on Thomas Saint Leger, his wife, and their
descendants can be found in my book, Plantagenet Ancestry, and also in
my forthcoming book, Magna Carta Ancestry (scheduled for publication in
June 2005).

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
