Author Michel Mollat in "Histoire de Rouen" discussed
Trade as it existed 1000-1300. He claimed that much of
the Trade 11th century on the banks of the Seine was
controlled by the local Dukes. Imports included salt,
fish, wool,English bacon, and Irish skins of martens.

It is interesting to read that Robert Courtehouse put
an embargo on the English bacon!

Exports appeared to be mainly wine - wine was uncommon
in England - no doubt there was a demand from the many
anglo-norman families. By the 12th century Charters
confirmed that middle class women had the monopoly of
unloading wine into the store rooms.

Wine trade deliveries took place in London and
Southampton. However by the 13th century Rouen no
longer controlled the shipping of wine. Wine was
loaded on ships at Dieppe and Caen - the long journey
down the twisting Seine had proved inconvenient.

The above information supports J.Horace Round's claims
in "Early Irish Trade with Chester and Rouen". When
one considers the large population of anglo normans in
England, there was demand for provisions to meet their
needs in England. Quite possibly many of the early
merchants eventually settled in England.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
