Hello, everybody, and an early Happy St. Patrick's Day,
I have a question I hope someone can answer for me -- especially John
Ravilious, since we apparently share some of the same ancesty.
Has anyone EVER attempted to analyze all branches of the ancestry of a
single gateway ancestor? By that, for example, has anyone pieced together a
*complete* royal/noble ancestry of somebody like William FARRAR of Virginia?
Since I'm a regular user of Plantagenet Ancestry, Gary Boyd Roberts' RD500
and RD600, the newest CP [13 volumes in 6] and most recently
Genealogics.org, I know individual lines have been identified. The more I
read of the above, the more I began to wonder if someone had done a complete
analysis of a single gateway ancestor's ancestry.
I look forward to reading your answers.
Best wishes,
Richard Anderson in Danville, Virginia
PS -- I'm in the process of doing such an analysis of William FARRAR's
ancestry -- using only the above sources -- and have completed about 900
4-generation pedigree charts with minimal accidental duplications [perhap
1%-2%].
Please satisfy my curiosity....

My guess would be that a lot of people have: I know I have done it with
several. It is just a whole lot easier to find information on the
ancestry of, say, Edward I than Nicholas Goushill or Odo Moyle, so it
tends to skew the result. (Someone published a book a few years ago on
the 'complete' ancestry of gateway Oliver Mainwaring, which suffers from
the same difficulties.) There are also innumerable web pages and
Ancestral File entries that attempt the same, again with patchy (and
untrustworthy) results.

I would assume so. I have attempted in my own files to do so
for my own two gateway ancestors, the Rev. Robert Rose of Virginia
and William Ironmonger of Virginia.
Ironmonger is much harder, since the version of his line
I have, from an excellent article by Paul Read, is very long and
thin, back to Henry I. Rose is very different. It is much easier
since it rapidly ties back to people in the Scots Peerage. SP
is a vastly easier source to use compared to CP, since it lists
children.
I have used every source available to me, which does not include
Royalty for Commoners, but does include the vast numbers of
bogus trees on the Web. I carefully check all leads with the
reputable sources, of which I have SP and CP on my desk. I also
have RD600 and PA3, but these are really of no value, the first since
it has only exceedingly thin lines, the second since it is so
agressively English centered. Leo's web site is also very useful,
though I check even it carefully for reliable references.
To date I personally have found exactly zero "unhinted" lines,
possibly because of the scarcity of Scottish resources at our
library.
