SOPHIE and/or JUDITH

Is it a fact that in 'days of yore' the names Sophie and Judith were
sometimes interchangeable?

If so, could the problem with whether or not 'Sophie' de Lorraine b 1163
(Sophie von Lothringen (1163-1217) - her father known as Graf Mattheus I von
Lothringen) was an actual person be that she and a sister Judith b 1152
(marr. Etienne II de Traves Ct d'AUXONNE/BOURGOGNE) are one and the same
person? I know the birth dates are different but if there was no 'Sophie'
where did the dates for her come from?

All I have for a date of death for Etienne II de Traves Ct
d'AUXONNE/BOURGOGNE is 'after 1173' and no date of death for Judith other
than 19 March. Sophie's son, Heinrich Ostertag von WINDSTEIN, was born
1190, so it is possible that Judith could have been his mother.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Diane

No - the name Sophie comes from Greek, and Judith from the Bible. There
may have been individual women who were given both names, but these
were not interchangeable.

Sometimes, you have strange combinations. For example, I found
many times (but in 1700-1800 and not in the medieval era) that
someone was named Barbe in some records and Elisabeth in other
records. I understand there may be similar couples, but for these
names, it was too frequent to consider that as coincidences.

Marie and Marie Joseph is another pair.

And there are many records that have a mistake and any name could
be any other one.
