With many thanks to Peter Kincaid.

Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll, was married "by 24 October 1490" to Lady Elizabeth Stewart (NAS, GD220/6/1952). This must imply they married before, and probably a few years before. According to the Scots Peerage they had four sons, Colin, Archibald, John and Donald (and seven or eight daughters).

According to the Scots Peerage, the first son, Colin, 3rd Earl of Argyll, married before 28 February 1507 Lady Jean Gordon. He could have been 14 when he married, placing him as born in 1493, but I am sure he was born a few years earlier.

According to the Scots Peerage, Archibald the second son married twice but does not give the name of the first wife nor when the first marriage took place. No help here.

According to Scots Peerage, John the third son married Muriel Calder in 1510. If he was 14 he would be born in 1496 BUT

According to The Heraldry of the Campbells by G. Harvey Johnston, the fourth son Donald was born in 1492. This is the only date I have been able to find. Was Donald also the fourth child? Somehow I doubt this. If he is, then that could/should place his parents marriage to about 1488 but if one or two daughters were born before Donald, then the parents could have been married in 1485 or even earlier.

All this still does not tell us when Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll was born. Apparently he was born before 24 October 1469, or before 1468.

Can anyone enlighten me any further? It is sad that such a great family is so badly recorded.
With best wishes
