New idea: Thomas WILSON, Bishop of Sodor & Man/Richard SHERL

Dear all,

I am an amateur, but avid, family historian, with a main interest in the
Sherlock family of Wirral, Cheshire and their connections. Please forgive
my style of writing and layout, I do not have an academic background.

It is the relationship between Richard Sherlock, DD, Rector of Winwick and
the Wilson family which include Thomas Wilson, Bishop of Sodor and Man, that
has proved puzzling, but which I think is now solved.

There are a group of cousins whose help and knowledge has been invaluable in
working on this; Dave Griffiths whose super-sleuthing has discovered most of
the documents on which we have based our new finds; Gordon Evans, who has
listed our records from the Cheshire Parish Register Database, and put them
into proper order; George Evans who has checked overall for obvious errors.

There is an excellent on-line resource for some of the Cheshire parishes:
http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/

Our direct ancestors were married in Woodchurch:
27th July 1607 John Sherlocke to Cicilye Fells

They had children baptised in Woodchurch:
24th April 1608 Henry Sherlocke (direct line) (buried 25 June 1637)
21st April 1610 William Sherlocke (buried 14th November 1626)
15th November 1612 Richard Sherlocke (who went on to become DD, Rector of
Winwick, Lancashire, 1662 - 1689)

John Sherlock was buried in Woodchurch on April 13th 1613, leaving Cicilye a
widow.

Revd. John Keble (1792-1866), after whom Keble College is named, was a
prodigious correspondent, and took an interest in both Richard Sherlock (DD,
Rector of Winwick 1662 -1689) and Richard's nephew, Thomas Wilson (Bishop of
Sodor and Man).

From the will of Richard Sherlock, written on 14th June 1689, he says:

"Item I give to my brothers Nathaniel and Jonathan Wilson and to my Cousen
John Wilson of Willaston to each ten pounds (vizt) thirty pounds in all to
be bestowed amongst their respective children. And moreover , To my nephew
Thomas Wilson, being my curate, I do give Ten pounds with a mourning Ring of
twenty shillings price."

In the on-line biographies of Richard Sherlock, and Thomas Wilson, Bishop of
Sodor and Man, the general opinion is that Nathaniel Wilson married Alice, a
sister of Richard Sherlock.

In St. Nicholas Church, Burton, there is a memorial slab inscribed:

Nathaniel Wilson, died May 29th 1702, aged 75
Alice Wilson, died August 16th 1707
Had issue
Samuel
James
Joseph
Sarah
Benjamin
Thomas, Bishop of Man
Mary

On June 22nd 1861, William Wilson (a descendant of the Burton Wilson
family), writes to Revd. Keble:

"You were curious of discovering why Dr. Sherlock called Jonathan Wilson his
brother, in common with Nathaniel, and whether it arose from Jonathan, as
well as Nathaniel, having married a sister of the Doctor. I have
discovered, among my father's papers, a bond relative to the transfer of
some land in Burton from Thomas Browne to Jonathan Wilson and his wife
Katherine, bearing date 1691. If you have a memorandum of the names of Dr.
Sherlock's brothers, sisters, the name of Katherine may lead to a solution
of the point."

Follow 'Genealogy' links, work through 'parish record' pieces, and under
'Michael', from the Kirk Michael Burial Registers:

"Mr William Browne, born at Burton in Werrel - late of Dublin. Half uncle
to the Right Reverend the Lord Bishop with whom he lived for some years, was
buried at the east end of this church. Aged 80 years - 21st March 1718."

Rev. Savage, in 1881, Notes on the Parish Registers of Kirk Michael, Isle of
Man, says "he was probably half-uncle by being the son of the Bishop's
grandmother by a second marriage".

However, using records from Cheshire Parish Register Database, Thomas Browne
junior married Elizabeth (?), and in Burton baptisms:

Ales 14th August 1623
Joseph 5th March 1627 (buried 13 June 1627)
Sarah 1st July 1628 (married John Leather 1657)
Catherine 10 September 1631
Thomas 13th April 1634

Their mother Elizabeth was buried on 9 October 1634 in Burton, and Thomas
Browne junior married again to Margaret Fletcher at Burton on 13th September
1635.

They had children baptised in Burton:

Margareta 28th January 1638 (buried 18th September 1638)
William 12th July 1640
Joseph 7th May 1643 (died)
Joseph 10th May 1646
Hannah 30th June 1652

The William Browne above baptised on 12th July 1640 looks to be the same
William Browne buried in Kirk Michael on 21st March 1718, as described in
Kirk Michael registers.

For him to be half uncle to the Bishop, then it must be Ales BROWNE baptised
in 1623 who marries Nathaniel Wilson, and who are Thomas Wilson, Bishop of
Sodor & Man's parents. Brothers and sisters of Ales Browne from her
father's first marriage would be full uncle/aunt to her children. Her half
brothers/sisters from her father's second marriage would be half uncle/aunt
to her children.

It is a strong possibility that Catherine, her sister, baptised in 1631,
marries Jonathan Wilson, and is the Katherine referred to in the William
Wilson letter above.

However, William Browne would be half-uncle to the Bishop by reason of his
grandFATHER's second marriage.

The only person who could be half uncle to the Bishop by reason of his
grandMOTHER'S second marriage would be Richard Sherlock, DD, of Winwick, and
that can now only be if Richard Sherlock's widowed mother Cicilye Sherlock
(nee Fells) had re-married to William Wilson, and were father and mother of
Nathaniel and Jonathan Wilson. There is a burial record in Neston St. Mary
& St. Helen parish registers:

7th January 1645 Cycillye Wilson, wife of William Wilson.

She would therefore be grandmother to Thomas Wilson, Bishop of Sodor & Man
by reason of her second marriage.

Nathaniel and Jonathan were baptised in Neston, St. Mary & St. Helen's:

16th March 1626 Nathanyall, Willm. Wylson
21st February 1630 Jonathan, Willm. Wylson

Richard Sherlock would then be half brother to Nathaniel and Jonathan, and
half uncle to Thomas Wilson, son of Nathaniel and Alice (nee Browne),
baptised in Burton on 25th December 1663.

Best regards,
Yvonne Purdy (nee Sherlock)
