Pat:

Thank you for the 1250/56 Grant information.

The variation in spelling of the surname can be
considerable through phonetic interpretation. In the
matter of Robert de Bulkileg 1250/1254, study of the
Grant reveals that the writer made a practise of
omitting the "h" of "----legh". For example Bulkilegh,
Wennislegh, Mosilegh, Bardelegh, Ridlegh.

Robert de Bulkilegh was recorded as a sheriff in
Cheshire 1232, 1244, 1250-70, 1262 (presumably the
same individual), and would appear to be an ancestor
of the Eaton line.

The Eaton line descended to John Bulkeley who married
Chistian de Ripariis (about 1380), to their son
William, and then to Charles their grandson who
inherited the Ripariis property in Hampshire and
Devonshire, and included the Manor of Burgate Hundred
of Fordingbridge.

I assume the title of Eaton developed through a
marriage because I have not found any property
transaction to explain it.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
