Could fellow listers please cease devoting page after page to
criticising each other?
Medieval geneology is a fine subject, but endless rounds of criticism
and counter-sniper email should be on some other web site.

1000% agreement. If you want to call each other names and denigrate each
others industry, knowledge, or what ever why not do it to your personal email
addys rather than impose your ridiculous academic rants upon the list members
who care nothing about them.

Dear Friends,

Please allow me to make some OT observations. As a relative newcomer
here, I have been very frequently so appalled at the bitter tone, the
seemingly obsessive desires to score ideological points, or to deliver
wounding blows to foes that, to paraphrase Henri IV, I debated whether
GEN-MED "vaut bien une messe". I have decided, at least for now, that
it does.

Although ignorance and its accomplices transparent venom and pettiness
are bad enough, what is especially disconcerting to witness is the
greater evil too often visible - attempts by those among us who should
be far above such things, who through occasionally rather brilliant
sophistry and selective data analysis and interpretation attempt to
slant discussions with the covert desire to simply destroy. Too
frequently I have witnessed some of the best and brightest among us take
a tack that to me is so clearly *not* motivated by the desire for truth,
but rather, in the guise of superlative scholarship and analysis, to
destroy someone they just plain don't like.

Those who have been blessed with high intelligence and first rate
educations have an even *greater* responsibility to humanity to take the
straight and narrow moral and ethical road. To use the essentially "high
performance engine" they have, by purest luck been given, to destroy,
rather than to use these great gifts to impartially, humanely, and
dispassionately seek the truth is a betrayal of the great blessings they
enjoy.
