I am not trying to be coy, Mr Richardson, and I really do appreciate the
depth of your research into these families. That being said, it seems that some
other people might be interested in this particular family. I am aware that
the number of succeeding generations named William Stanley of Hooton has
been questioned before. VCH Stafford 7 supports the number of generations as
presented in the 1580 Cheshire Visitation. I tried to find support for this
from the John Ryland charters at Manchester. Just using these as a source the
following outline of the family can be made:

1. William de Stanlegh [died 1318-1324], Lord of the manors of Stanlegh and
Over Elkeston, Staffs.; and Storeton, Cheshire.
m. Johanna [alive 1325]

2. John de Stanlegh [In 1310 he was granted the manors of Stanlegh and Over
Elkeston from his father.]

3. William de Stanley, Lord of Stanley manor, Staffs.; and Storeton,
Cheshire; forester of Wyrhale (Wirral); keeper of Shotewyk (Shotwick) park.
[apparently alive 1377]

4. William de Stanley, knt., Lord of Stanley manor and Storeton. [apparently
alive 1415]
m. Margery de Hoton [alive 1406], daughter of William de Hoton, Lord of
Hoton. The marriage agreement for this couple was dated 10 Jan 1376.

5. William de Stanley, knt., of Hoton (Hooton) [deceased by 1424].
m. by 1403 Blanche [alive 1424], parents of the succeeding William de
Stanley.

*** This is where the situation is difficult in figuring, just using the
Ryland charters. It is not certain if they are the parents or grandparents of
this next individual.***

6. or 7. William Stanley, esq., of Hoton (Hooton) [deceased between Dec
1465 and March 1465/6].
Letters of pardon issued by king in 1446 and again in 1456.
m. Alicia de Hoghton [alive 1465/6], sister of Henry Hoghton, esq., of
Hoghton

7. or 8. William Stanley, knt., of Hoton (Hooton) [alive 1510].
m. (licence) 26 July 1470 Agnes Grosveno(u)r, daughter and co-heiress of
Robert Grosvenor of Hulme.

Unfortunately, conclusive support for the Savage descent of this Stanley
family was not found using the charters mentioned above. I am certain Mr
Richardson has exhaustively checked into this line, and I for one do look forward
to any future publications of his.
