A vague Leete/Burgoyne clue?

I wanted to share this in case it may provide some encouragement for
those seeking to learn the parentage of Phebe Leete's grandmother,
Ellen Burgoyne. It's an entry in the Calendar of Inquisitions Post
Mortem for Henry VII, a proof of age in 1502 for one Richard Burgoyn.

'596. Richard Burgoyn, son and heir of John Burgoyn.

Writ 27 April, proof of age 15 July, 17 Henry VII.

CAMBRIDGE. He was born at Cambridge, 20 December, [20] Edward IV, and
baptised in the church of St Botolph in that town the same day, as John
Rumbold, aged 45 and more, remembers, because he was then living with
Thomas Meryn, rector of the parish of St Botolph, who baptised him.
Henry Janyn, aged 50 and more, remembers it, because on 5 May following
the first born son of Master John Leventhorp was born, who is 21 and
more. Joan, daughter of Henry Lete (aged 59 and more), who is 21 and
more, was born the same year. Thomas Pers, aged 56 and more, was in
town that dat. Thomas Atwode, aged 50 and more, was living in Gyrton
with Mistress Battesforth, who was godmother of the said Richard. John
Barnard (aged 48 and more) went to Trumpyngton for one Master Rede to
be godfather, &c.

His lands of inheritance were in the king's custody.

C. Series II. Vol. 16. (45.)'

Not the 'missing link', but it's interesting to speculate what, if any,
link there may have been between this Henry Lete and the Burgoyne
family. Perhaps this will serve to lead someone in the right direction.
To the best of my knowledge this is the earliest document found yet
showing so much as proximity between the Leetes and the Burgoynes at
about the time Ellen is believed to have been born.

A vague Leete/Burgoyne clue?

Matthew,

I was hoping someone would respond to your message and fill us all in on the
status of research into Phebe Leete's ancestry.

I do know that Gary Boyd Roberts, in the introduction (IIRC) to his _RD 600_,
includes her in a list of New England colonists whom he believes likely has
royal ancestry, but I don't know what the possible line is. I know Roberts is
looking into a line from Robert II of France to Thomasine (Burgoyne) Shute, an
ancestor of Gov. William Leete of Connecticut. Perhaps this is also the line
for Phebe?

I'd be interested in knowing what the suspected line for Phebe might be.

Thanks for your comments. At the moment I'm too busy with other
personal and professional projects to do more than take an occasional
interest in this line, and pass on bits of data as some encouragement
to those who may be researching Phebe. I've no way of knowing if any
other researchers have in fact begun a focused effort on Ellen Burgoyne
since Phebe's lineage was discussed here about a year ago, in the
context of the appearance of the (then) new RD600, as you mention. One
can hope... Some additional information about the Burgoynes of
Cambridgeshire, Phebe's putative kin, can now be found at
http://www.british-history.ac.uk by searching Volume IX of the VCH of the
County of Cambridge.
