Fw: Fw: Question about membership

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 23 feb 2005 07:41:03

$50 may sound cheap but the new member him/herself is expected to supply a
line to Charlemagne, no doubt that links to information already existing in
the data base. All that needs doing is to add a little which connects to
existing data and it is done.

Denis proposes to do some work and charges for that, that is a different
thing altogether.

By the way I do not charge, and anyone with a little genealogical knowledge
could extract a line to Charlemagne from my data base and if they contact me
I can do the same, except I would not make a CD

Best wishes
Leo van de Pas

So you pay your fee (was that $50? cost CD and postage $5 profit $45) and
all you get is a CD? He gets your information which should add to his

collection and he can use it for the next 'member'.
$50 is quite cheap. I was to propose a lineage to Charlemagne for
$300, which includes finding about 2000 ancestors since we don't know
which line is the right line (actually, we don't know for sure that
someone will link to a gateway royal descent).

Here, $50 is a typical price for a line to the first of the name,
i.e. for about 10 to 12 couples until the gateway (usually the French
migrant).

Hey you can pay ME $50 and I will extract a line to Charlemagne from Leo's
database and sent him a check for $25 !! How does that sound? Sounds good to
me .

$30 to $50 is a typical price for a male line in a Quebec family
association. There are about 200 or 300 such associations.
Independant genealogists will offer a similar price and this is
usually a 1 or 2 hours job from public databases (that are printed
and not on the Internet). By the way, most family associations will
use the data provided by members, but they will offer activities like
a review and meetings.

A royal line is something quite different. First of all, you have to
find who among maybe 500 to 2000 ancestors is the royal descent. And
this is likely the bigger part of the task. Building a database
limited to descendants is a job of many years...

Easy for YOU to say :) It took me ten years to track my Quebecois family
from Washington to Saskatchewan to Manitoba to North Dakota to Wisconsin to
Quebec ... and then track them back from parish to parish in Quebec until I was
able to tie into the 1608-1730 database of Rene Jette.
And in all that tracking I only found ONE Royal descent!

Usually, I find no or one royal descent when I do a Quebec
genealogy. Having 2 different royal descents is not frequent.

In my own case, I have one known and 2 potential lines (not
published and made by other searchers).

The next time I will refresh my database, I will check how many
descents I have from known gateways.

Well, at least you found that one.

Now at last you're part of the bonafide elite. Congratulations!

The Metis society did a nice report on the family of my son-in-law
(through Quebec and into France & Switzerland) for free.

Cheers,
