Question on British Succession

Legg inn av Scaly Lizard » 23 feb 2005 01:29:00

Hello all,

I have a question about the current British royal
line of succession. I found a list at:

http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page389.asp

and it goes like this:

Sovereign
1. The Prince of Wales
2. Prince William of Wales
3. Prince Henry of Wales
4. The Duke of York
5. Princess Beatrice of York
6. Princess Eugenie of York
7. The Earl of Wessex
8. The Lady Louise Windsor
9. The Princess Royal
10. Mr. Peter Phillips
11. Miss Zara Phillips
12. Viscount Linley
13. The Hon. Charles Armstrong-Jones
14. The Hon. Margarita Armstrong-Jones
15. The Lady Sarah Chatto
16. Master Samuel Chatto
17. Master Arthur Chatto
18. The Duke of Gloucester
19. Earl of Ulster
20. The Lady Davina Windsor
21. The Lady Rose Windsor
22. The Duke of Kent
23. The Lady Marina Charlotte Windsor
24. The Lady Amelia Windsor
25. The Lady Helen Taylor
26. Master Columbus Taylor
27. Master Cassius Taylor
28. Miss Eloise Taylor
29. Miss Estella Taylor
30. The Lord Frederick Windsor
31. The Lady Gabriella Windsor
32. Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy
33. Mr. James Ogilvy
34. Master Alexander Ogilvy
35. Miss Flora Ogilvy
36. Mrs. Paul Mowatt
37. Master Christian Mowatt
38. Miss Zenouska Mowatt
39. The Earl of Harewood

I understand it all until #23. Obviously, the Duke of Kent
comes after the descendants of Gloucester: Ulster and the
Windsor girls Davina and Rose. My quandary is this: why
does the succession skip from Kent at #22 to his grand
daughters, Marina Charlotte and Amelia?

By the chart, it seems that Kent's son George the Earl
of St Andrews should be #23, and his son Edward
Baron Downpatrick should be #24, ahead of Edward's
younger sisters (Marina Charlotte and Amelia).

Also, why is Lord Nicholas Windsor, the younger brother
of St Andrews missing? By the bloodlines, he should be
listed after #24 Amelia, but before #25 Helen and ahead
of the 4 Taylor children.

Anyone know why portions of the family of the Duke of
Kent are not in the succession? If i had to guess, i'd venture
that it has something to do with the 1701 Act Of Settlement,
but if anyone knows more, then i'd be glad to learn why.

Also, i can't find an Earl Of Harewood (#39) on the chart
i'm using, so does anyone know who he is and where he
descends from? By his placement, one would think that
he must be the son of Zenouska Mowatt, but she's only
15 years old!

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide,

20. The Lady Davina Windsor

22. The Duke of Kent

The Duke of Kent's son, George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, is excluded
from the throne because he married a Catholic. The Earl's son, Lord
Downpatric is also excluded from the throne, because of his conversion
to Catholicism. (It is illegal for a Catholic to ascend the throne.) The
Earl's two daughters (Marina and Amelia) below, are not excluded from
the sucession. Lord Nicholas Windsor is excluded from the throne because
of his conversion to Catholicism.

23. The Lady Marina Charlotte Windsor
24. The Lady Amelia Windsor
25. The Lady Helen Taylor
26. Master Columbus Taylor

35. Miss Flora Ogilvy
36. Mrs. Paul Mowatt
37. Master Christian Mowatt
38. Miss Zenouska Mowatt
39. The Earl of Harewood

The Earl of Harewood (b 1923) is a son of George V, so he is first
cousin to The Queen.

I counted several questions :-))

Try the following list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_of_Su ... ish_throne
which explains amongst other things:
a) George Earl of St Andrews married a Roman Catholic
b) who the Earl of Harewood is

Thanks very much for the info, i had suspected that
Catholicsm was the reason, per the 1701 Act. And yes,
now i see Elizabeth R's aunt listed as having married
the Earl of Harewood, but her descendants are a tiny
note that just says "2 sons". Apparently, at least one
of them survives, lol.

Thanks again,

Oops, yes, that was supposed to read "grandson" of George V. Thanks for
pointing it out.
