No, Will, he is clearly rattled by the embarrassing revelations of his
ineptitude and rancour, from someone who actually has merited the kind of
respect from the genealogical community that he craves for himself.
Pitiful, but not pitiable - he hasn't deserved that.
And now as well as phoney special pleading he is suddenly posting a slew of
information on other matters to distract from his troubles....the usual
Richardson technique, crude & useless.

Re: Magna Carta Ancestry
John,
Your accusation---or perhaps "insinuation" is the more accurate word---about
Paul Reed is something that concerns, and should concern, everyone in the
genealogical community. This is all the more true because of his
prominence. Even I, who count myself as illiterate in his field, have read
a number of his articles.

Richard Smyth

Re: Magna Carta Ancestry
Dear Richard
I absolutely agree with you. One has to wonder about the motivation
behind these disaffected insinuations by persons who have little
experience in medieval research and even less judgement. One can only
imagine that they have someone else's axe to grind.
criticisms aired on the newsgroup. It is one of the best reviews of its
kind that I've read, setting a standard all of its own.
Richardson is a relative newcomer to medieval genealogy, a fact which
has been demonstrated time and again in many of his posts. And although
the newsgroup and Spencer have done a great job of mentoring him, his
continuing deficiency is a lack of understanding of the material that
he uses, and the superficiality of his research. Thankfully most of RPA
is a compilation of other people's work which makes its accuracy of a
fair standard.
As for Paul Reed, I have engaged him to do research on a number of
occasions at SLC and have found him professional, conscientious,
thorough and, as he said, willing to go that extra mile to achieve the
excellence which makes his work a cut above the rest. You only have to
read his articles to guage the depth of his research and his
understanding of the historical context of the records he examines, to
understand the basis for his long-established reputation. I certainly
wouldn't entrust my research with anyone else.
Incidentally, although he modestly would not advertise the fact to the
newsgroup, Chris Phillips is available for research at Kew or in London
at a very reasonable rate. Likewise he is highly recommended.
Cheers
Rosie

From what I've seen of RPA, Nat's review of it is informative,
accurate, and well-balanced and it reflects in detail many of the
criticisms aired on the newsgroup. It is one of the best reviews of its
kind that I've read, setting a standard all of its own.
