Millie is a great-granddaughter of the Hon. Mrs Alice Keppel, nee
Edmonstone, daughter of a baronet & wife of a yr son of an earl of
Albemarle. Mrs Keppel met the then prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in
the late 1890s and became the last of his many *maitresses en titre*.
Popular lore has it that while the princess of Wales (Queen Alexandra)
detested most of his women (especially Lady Warwick), she tolerated Mrs
Keppel who was discreet and pleasant. (According to one story, when
Nicholas II, Alexandra Feodorovna and their children once visited England,
the Empress remained aloof and melancholy while meeting everyone on deck but
then invited Mrs Keppel to come to her cabin, where she eagerly asked "My
dear, where do you get your wool?" [for knitting]).

It is often (and reliably) repeated that when Edward VII was on his
deathbed, Queen Alexandra summoned a number of his close friends to say
goodbye to him, and Mrs Keppel was among them.

Opinion remains divided as to whether Edward VII was the biological father
of Mrs Keppel's younger daughter Sonia Keppel (1900-1986, wife of the 3rd
Lord Ashcombe), who in the fullness of time became Millie's maternal
grandmother. Chronologically the filiation is possible (Mrs K's older
daughter Violet, remembered for her relationship with Vita Sackville-West,
was certainly born before Mrs K. met the prince.) Lady Ashcombe gave an
indication of her own beliefs about her parentage by titling her memoirs
*Edwardian Daughter*. All that has ever been accepted as certain or nearly
so, however, is that the Hon. Mr Keppel was the father of neither Violet nor
Sonia.
