Peter de la Mare 1376

I'm hoping someone might have the ancestry of Sir Peter de la Mare, said to
be the first Speaker of the House in 1376. I believe he had a daughter,
Joan, who married Simon de Brockbury. Sir Peter is characterized as a
Knight of the Shire for Hereford and as the Chief Steward for Edmund
Mortimer, Earl of March.

I found no reference to him in CP, Sub de la Mare. Given that he is a
historically significant person, I'm hoping something is known regarding his
ancestry. Can anyone connect him?

Sincerely,
Gordon Kirkemo

Not sure of his pedigree. The Duchess of Cleveland in the her _Battle Abbey
Rolls_ (Vol II p 194, 1889) writes:

"Sir Peter de La Mare of Yatton, knight of the shire for Herefordshire, was
chosen Speaker of the House of Commons at the accession of Richard II. He had
been nominated for the office in the last Parliament of the previous reign, but
rejected through the influence of the Court party, and imprisoned in
Nottingham Castle for speaking his mind too freely respecting Alice Perers, "the
Abishaig of King Edward III." He continued none the less independent and "bold of
speech;" for his first act as Speaker was to make several important regulations
for the government of the country during the young King's minority. At his
death, Yatton passed to his great nephew Roger Seymour, ancestor of the Dukes of
Somerset."

Not sure what an Abishaig was, but one can guess.
