Wills - archdeanery of Leicester

I am in the process of tracking down some 16th- & 17th-century wills
from this jurisdiction. The FHL has filmed this probate collection
(just over 200 rolls) not once but twice--in 1958 and 1988--and has two
completely separate catalogue entries. The arrangement of materials on
the two film sets looks rather different, and I suspect a reorganization
of the original files between 1948 and 1988. It is ironic that neither
series appears to have the same basic organizational scheme as the
printed index from 1902 (pre civil war) and 1920 (post restoration).
Neither film set appears to embed any finding aids (calendars or
indices).

Does anyone here have experience using films--or the originals--of this
collection? Are the 1988 films better, or is it easier to use the 1958
set if one is working from the 1902 index?

Isn't it "Archdeaconry" rather than "Archdeanery"?

Not to be picky, or anything. :-)

Indeed it is, and you're the second to have mentioned it. I earlier
made the mistake of replacing one term with the other, though they are
not equivalent. The jurisdiction is that of the "Commissary Court of
the Archdeaconry of Leicester", a sensible subunit of the vast & rich
diocese of Lincoln.

It's worth being picky, about some things.

I'm still curious about the two microfilm series from this court, if
anyone has used them.
