Update on Magna Carta Ancestry
Dear Newsgroup ~
It's been a long five years since plans were originally announced here
on the newsgroup for the publication of the book, Magna Carta Ancestry.
The work was originally planned to be co-authored by myself and the
late Dr. David Faris of Philadelphia. Dr. Faris and I spent several
years doing the basic research for the book. But, before we could
bring the project to fruition, Dr. Faris developed cancer, had a kidney
removed, underwent chemo-therapy and dialysis, and, in time succumbed
to a back infection. Dr. Faris was always and ever a pleasure with
which to work. He had a delightful sense of humor and a passion for
medieval history in all its facets. He is greatly missed.
Following Dr. Faris' death, I decided to progress with the planned
Magna Carta volume alone. However, a series of delays occurred which
caused the book to be put on the back burner. First, I chose to embark
on a program of a massive expansion of the database and the sources
cited. To better improve the documentation for each couple in the
database, it was necessary to examine an endless array of original
records, abstracts, inquests, deeds, charters, lawsuits, wills, and
countless secondary sources. Much progress was made but it took a
great deal of time both to find the desired information and then to add
it to the manuscript. Second, various technical problems with
Microsoft Word were encountered which were unexpected and unforeseen.
The technical problems probably ate up at least a year of time. In
time, Kim Everingham joined the team. He offered much needed technical
assistance and also helped to create a massive bibliography of medieval
sources. Our first joint production was Plantagenet Ancestry which
came out in 2004. The response from the public has been wonderful.
As the wheel of time has continued to turn, we are now at the place
where Magna Carta Ancestry is nearly finished. The last line has been
added, the cross references are being checked, the index is nearly
complete, and the bibliography has grown even more massive. Hundreds
of ancient heraldic seals have been added and a new index of battles
has been developed. In the very near future, Magna Carta Ancestry will
be a reality.
I wish to heartily thank everyone for their patience in waiting for
both Plantagenet Ancestry and Magna Carta Ancestry to appear. I never
doubted that Kim and I would finish our work, as we are both very
focused researchers and both of us are deeply committed to completing
this work. However, I surely underestimated the time it would take to
finish the job. Virtually everything I tackled in the Plantagenet book
took four or five times longer to complete than I originally
anticipated. Kim also had his own share of time eaters which came his
way. Regardless, Kim and I were committed to excellence, whatever time
it took. And, it took lots and lots of time to do it right.
As Magna Carta book has reached its final stage, the time has arrived
for the manuscript to be proofread, spelling errors caught,
inconsistencies to be rooted out, and the final polishing applied.
Just this morning I shipped off the manuscript to two energetic
genealogists who have graciously offered to proofread the final draft
for us. If anyone else is interested in helping with this process, I
would be glad to ship them a copy of the manuscript on CD as well. Due
to the tight time schedule, all corrections and additions will have to
be in hand within a month's time.
Lastly, I've decided to offer the Magna Carta book to newsgroup members
at a special prepublication price of $60.00 (price includes shipping)
until the book is published (June 1, 2005). The price after
publication will be a minimum of $85.00, plus shipping. Please contact
me at my e-mail address if you are interested in the prepublication
offer. Due to the new changes in google, I'm unable to display my
email address in its normal fashion. As such, I will type it with
spaces which will have to be deleted when sending me an e-mail:
royalancestry @ msn.com. The length of the finished book will be
approximately 1,000 pages, give or take. Besides containing a mountain
of information, if the need arises for a door stop, the book should
perform the job well.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Re: Update on Magna Carta Ancestry
I am sure Mr. Richardson can and will explain this; but perhaps I can
shed at least a little light on why some "royal gateways" we would hope
to have seen in _Plantagenet Ancestry_ may not appear. Mr. Richardson's
work is a successor to Dr. Faris work - and crucially the factor for
inclusion therein was immigrants to America *by 1700*. This necessarily
explains the absence of many of our Scottish ancestors, arriving
typically after that date.

Re: Update on Magna Carta Ancestry
Dear Doug ~
I've been posting lists of colonial immigrants for many years. If your
ancestor isn't found in these lists, then it is highly likely he or she
wouldn't be found in either the Magna Carta Ancestry or Plantagenet
Ancestry books. My books to date have been limited almost exclusively
to 17th Century English and Welsh immigrants. So, if you have a
Scottish ancestor who immigrated in the mid-1700's, he would not likely
be in my book.
Exclusions happen for four reasons: First, if the line is not valid or
well documented, I don't use it. Second, if the person immigrated
later than 1700, he or she invariably is not included. Third, if the
person immigrated from Scotland or Ireland, that usually is out of the
scope of my work. Fourth, if the line is sound but the genealogist
researching the family has not published his findings, I usually wait
until the person publishes their information to include the new line.
Having said that, the Magna Carta Ancestry book will contain several
descents for the 17th Century Scottish colonial immigrant, John
Barclay, of New Jersey. Barclay's ancestry is well documented and he
connects to all of the important women in Scottish history who have
Magna Carta baronial connections. To feature John Barclay's ancestry
and his Magna Carta connections, I've included all of the Scottish
kings from Robert I to James IV in my book. I've also included an
interesting new descent from William the Lion, King of Scotland, which
goes down to the immigrant, Gerard Fowke.
As soon as I have a list of immigrants for the Magna Carta Ancestry
book ready, I'll post it here on the newsgroup. I'll also post the
list up on my website. If your ancestor is not included for some
reason, my book should still be valuable to you. I've written Magna
Carta Ancestry to be used as a general reference work, not just as
genealogical treatise. If you're interested in the medieval period,
there is surely much to glean from my work.

Great!
I'll either send you a check or go this route.
Your address for checks is what? Others will want that address too.
And the 1000+-page, large-format book, _Magna Carta Ancestry_ will be
published and mailed when?
And this pre-publication price of $60, including slow, bookmail
shipping, is good until when?
Which edition of MCA will this be, Douglas?
GPC is the publisher?
Cheers,

Re: Update on Magna Carta Ancestry
Dear Ian ~
Thank you for asking this question. The prepublication offer of $60
for Magna Carta Ancestry (including postage) is for American orders
only. I have to charge extra for all orders outside the United States,
as shipping is far more expensive for foreign orders.
If you wish to place an overseas order or an order for Canada or
Mexico, please contact me offlist and I'll let you know what the amount
of the additional shipping charge will be. It differs for each
country. If you desire to use air mail rather than surface, please
know that air mail usually costs about $10 more than surface for most
countries. Surface rate supposedly takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. Air
mail is obviously much faster.
Parties interested in placing a pre-publication order may do so by
contacting me at my e-mail address below:
royalancestry @ msn.com
Delete the space before and after the "@".
As soon as I have time, I'll post the information regarding the
shipping costs for foreign orders up on my website at
http://www.royalancesty.net. The special pre-publication offer will be in
effect through June 1st.
Regarding foreign orders, this last year I shipped Plantagenet Ancestry
books all over the world. At least 25% of my orders came from Europe,
Australia, and New Zealand. It's always a delight to hear from my
foreign correspondants.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone who has offered to proofread the Magna
Carta Ancestry text and those who have already placed a pre-publication
order. Your support and good will have meant so much to me. Writing
the book has been a lot of hard work, but your enthusiastic response
has made it all worthwhile. Again, thanks.

Lastly, I've decided to offer the Magna Carta book to newsgroup
members
at a special prepublication price of $60.00 (price includes
shipping)
until the book is published (June 1, 2005). The price after
publication will be a minimum of $85.00, plus shipping. Please
contact
me at my e-mail address if you are interested in the prepublication
offer. Due to the new changes in google, I'm unable to display my
email address in its normal fashion. As such, I will type it with
spaces which will have to be deleted when sending me an e-mail:
royalancestry @ msn.com. The length of the finished book will be
approximately 1,000 pages, give or take. Besides containing a
mountain
of information, if the need arises for a door stop, the book should
perform the job well.
Douglas
Congrats on having finished this update. Please could you confirm
whether
the above price is inclusive of US Shipping only, or whether you
intend it
to be a single price including shipping for either US or overseas.
Thanks
Ian

The book will be about 1,000 pages in length. It will contain a
massive bibliography and a full index. The estimated date of
publication is on or about June 1st, 2005. I'm suppose to attend a
national conference in Nashville to do a book signing event the first
week in June. As soon as I return (June 4th), I should be able to
start shipping books out to people.
The pre-publication price is good until June 1st, 2005. As stated
above, the pre-publication price includes shipping and handling for
domestic orders. Foreign orders will be higher due to higher postage
costs to ship abroad.
This is the first edition of Magna Carta Ancestry. It contains new
lines of descent for many colonists. The format will be similar to the
Plantagenet Ancestry book. The bibliography has been upgraded to
include a listing of all the articles cited in the text. Also, a new
index to battles has been added.
Yes. Genealogical Publishing Company (GPC) is the publisher.
The printer should have the manuscript in ample time to have the book
ready on or before June 1st.
