Boucli Family

Matthew Pariis remarked that the British were famous
for their drunkeness - that was about one thousand
years ago.

Experts in Gen-Med advised some time ago that families
did not bother about surnames until the late 15th and
16th centuries. Well I guess if you are "blotto" all
the time, why bother about having a surname? The
Normans appear to have had some pride and interest in
family surnames - perhaps they were sober part of the
time!

Anyhow I was surfing through the web, and discovered
the Boucli Family in France. It proudly advised of
it's name with family lines in Germany, Switzerland,
and Algeria. What grabbed my attention was that the
Boucli Family claimed to be related to the Lancashire
Buckleghs. The records indicate that the Buckleghs
appeared in Lancashire during the early 1100s.

I thought " How very interesting". My theory for some
time has been that the Buckleghs came from Rouen. Yet
here was this French Family claiming the reverse.

My theory was supported by a number of sources:

Lancashire: 1180/1190. A Grant by Roger (son)
Alexander de Middleton to Geoffrey (son) Robert
Bucklegh Dean of Whalley of the whole of Ashworth
Middleton for the service of 40d yearly for sake fee.
There was a notation (French and English) which I
assumed indicated that Geoffrey Bucklegh was French.

Lancashire: 1413. A Marriage Settlement which
stipulated that Ellis de Bucley was French.

Normandy: 734. " Etudes critiques sur l'abbaye de
Saint-Wandrille" stipulated that in the year 734 (not
1734) the Abbey possessed Boucli ( located about 30
miles south east of Rouen)

I think our French friends need to investigate, and
perhaps revise their thinking. Their name of Boucli
appears to be quite ancient. And for the experts in
GEN-MED, perhaps their thinking with regard to
surnames needs to be qualified.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley
