Re: Clues from Chancery Proceedings, 1558-1579
The listing of a Henry Dudley embroiled in "money matters" in that time
interval automatically brings to mind the feckless, spendthrift, and
dastardly Capt. Sir Henry Dudley, who is last seen in the late 1560s as
the recipient of Crown protection from his creditors. I look forward
to seeing the actual case, which Brandon (no relation ...
) Fradd
will be ordering.
I'll also look forward to seeing (again via Mr. Fradd) the case
involving a Roger Dudley in connection with the personal estate of a
John Dudley of Middlesex. I'd think of John Dudley, Sgt. of ye
Pastrie, who was of Middlesex and was -- according to a theory floated
in the '60s or '70s -- father of Roger Dudley, save that that John
Dudley died in the 1590s.
I'm at a loss as to why I've not seen those listings before, unless the
library I was working in lacked Lists and Indexes, vol. 7! Thank you,
John.

Re: Clues from Chancery Proceedings, 1558-1579
You're very welcome. I thought it might be 'of interest' when I
spotted it.
If you go to the LDS Ancestral File, and enter "Richard Hatton" (as
husband) and "Elizabeth" (as wife), you'll come up with a Richard
Haffon/ Hatton who is said to have married Elizabeth (Clerke) Dudley,
widow of John Dudley. John Dudley is said to be the son of Simon and
Emme (Saunders) Dudley, and he and Elizabeth are given a number of
children (no Roger, however).
Which is why I included the other lawsuit ...
p. 237
--Kinge, John, and Mary his wife.
--Hatton, Richard, and Elizabeth his wife.
--Cambridge, personal estate of Henry Clerke (Cambridge).
I'll post a few more items from _Lists and Indexes_, vol. 7, later
today. There's an entry that gives the Christian name of Mary (Gye)
Maverick's father Robert's first wife, and shows she must have lived at
least a little longer than people have thought.

If you enter "John Dudley" and "Elizabeth Clerke" in the Ancestral
File, one of the entries does show a Roger Dudley as son.
Of course, this is 'just' the Ancestral File. But it may be a place to
start.

[Robert Gye's second wife--the mother of Mary Gye Maverick--was Grace
Dowrish. I've seen it written that Robert and Grace were married
_circa_ 1555. But if these suits are correctly dated (i.e., fall in
the period 1558-79), Robert Gye must still have been married to his
first wife, Joan, as late as 1558.]
