Martin Luther's Siblings?

Legg inn av Michael King » 03 feb 2005 22:41:02

A 11G grandfather of my wife (in her Monrad line) is said to have
married Martin Luther's sister, Elisabeth. While there seems to be
broad acceptance of such a marriage well after the possible fact, an
article written by pastor Martin Clasen in 1932 states that he could
not find any satisfactory contemporary proof that the marriage took
place.

Is there a biography of Luther which anybody on the list could
recommend, written after 1932, which may discuss his siblings and/or
which has a good reference list of original sources?

Regards,

Mike King.

There is a kind of a club of Luther's [and Luther's siblings]
descendants in Germany, who are known as "Lutheriden". I haven't kept
the coordinates but I remember I already visited a site dedicated to
them. Try "Lutheriden" on Google : 270 answers, most of them, if not all
in German.

Good luck.

Hi Emmanuel,

Thanks for the reply. I did exchange emails with this group a couple
of years ago. If I am not mistaken there was another Mr. Sartorius
involved in the loop at the time. I sent them the information I had
and they gave me a contact who, they said, was an expert in the
Monrad line, a Mrs. Mamsch if I recall correctly. Unfortunately the
postal address for this lady appears to have been wrong - the German
Post Office returned the letter. Maybe she had moved. I never managed
to contact her. This was before I had the reference to the 1932
article by Clasen (which I have).

So, I am casting around again in this area. There appears to be a lot
of material on Luther out there. I'm sure all of it is good stuff,
but I'm trying to winnow the possible reading task down a bit to
books which have information regarding his siblings, or possible
references to original sources about them.

Regards,

Mike King
