Alexander Campbell, Bishop of Brechin

Dugald Campbell, or Ardailtoun and Janet Graham are the parents of
Alexander Campbell, of Carco, who became bishop of Brechin. He married Helen Clephane and they had a daughter Marjory circa 1582 and most likely more children. Alexander died in February 1608.

Does anyone know where and when he was born? Can anyone provide any biographical details for him?

With many thanks.

Hello Leo,

There is a brief biography of him in the old DNB (Vol. 8, pp. 307-308)
which states that he was made Bishop of Brechin by Mary, Queen of
Scots, while still a boy but was never consecrated and principally made
use of his post to alienate most of the lands of the see of Brechin in
favour of the Earl of Argyll (who had caused him to be appointed in the
first place). He was attending the schools in Geneva in January
1573/74 but later returned to his bishopric and held it fairly
uneventfully until his death.

Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams
