Longford/Goushill Connection

Legg inn av Matthew Hovious » 29 jan 2005 13:46:46

After re-reading Rosie Bevan's outstanding monograph on the Longford
family of Derbyshire, I was again intrigued by the heraldic evidence of
a link between the Goushill and Longford families. Rosie mentions in
her article (page 224) that the Longford arms appeared on the tomb of
Sir Robert Goushill of Hoveringham. Has anyone in this newsgroup
attempted to research the possible source of this connection? At first
glance, from the Goushill lineage shown on genealogics.org it seems
possible that either Agnes, the mother of Sir Nicholas Goushill, or
Margaret, his grandmother, might have been Longfords; perhaps this
connection would also explain the appearance of the name Nicholas among
the Goushills.

Thoughts on this are welcomed.

Just as a matter of interest, I live about 15 miles from Hoveringham. When I
first went there, I had no idea there was an effigy of Sir Robert Goushill
and Elizabeth Fitzallan. I believe the present church is just pre-Victorian
in a hideous red brick. Apparently, the Vicar of that time decided to pull
down the old church rather than spend on repairs. The architect for the new
one was a relative.
Whether it was deliberately built for the effigy or was there by coincidence
is not clear but there was an alcove into which the effigy was fitted.
Unfortunately, it was too small for Lady Elizabeth. In order to make her fit
in, her feet and coronet were chopped off.
Vandalism is not new
