Hello All,

In prior SGM threads, recent finds concerning Symmes of Barnsley
and their ancestry (male line, as well as via Bosvile of Ardsley and
Hastings of Elsing and Gressenhall) have been discussed and
documented. Other than the marriage of William Symmes (dvp 1483) to
Margaret, dau. of Sir Thomas Bosvile of Ardsley, no other spouse had
been identified in the pedigree as traced back to Simon de Dene of
Hipperholme, co. Yorks. (d. aft 1343) [1].

In the published record concerning the 1386 dispute between Sir
Richard le Scrope and Sir Robert Grosvenor, a spouse has been
identified for Richard Symmes of Barnsley:
__________________________

" Sir Thomas Reresby was the son of Thomas Reresby of Thribergh in
Yorkshire, Esq. by Cicely daughter of Richard, and sister and
coheiress of John Gotham of Brinsforth in that county <2>, and was
born about the year 1326.
His deposition proves that the greater part of his life was
passed in military activites; and it affords some interesting
information respecting many of them. Sir Thomas Reresby married
Lucy daughter of John Sheffield, Esq. and by her had four sons:
Thomas, Francis, Edmond and James; and a daughter, Judith, who
married Richard Symmes of Barnsley <2>. Sir Thomas Reresby, the
eldest son, died in 1439, and was the ancestor of the family who
entered their pedigree at the Visitation of Yorkshire in 1584 <2>.'

Note to text (as consolidatd):
<2> Brooke's MS. Collections, f. 304. Vincent's MS. no 110. f. 44.
Glover's Visitation of Yorkshire, f. 56. In the Harleian MS.
1487, f. 240, the father of the Deponent is called a Knight. "[2]

What is clear is that this placement is in error: Sir Thomas de
Reresby lived ca. 1326 - 1393, and was succeeded by his son Sir
Thomas Reresby, who was living and accounted for in the 1379 Subsidy
for Yorkshire [3]. Richard Symmes of Barnsley lived say 1410/1420 to
his death after 7 March 1491/92 [when his will was written] and
before 6 Oct 1492 [when his will was proved some 7 months later].

Evidently, the placement of some individuals in the Reresby
pedigree of 1584 is as questionable as some in the oft-discussed
FitzWilliam of Sprotborough pedigree of the same year. It appears
far more likely that Judith Reresby was the daughter, or possibly
granddaughter, of the younger Thomas Reresby (d. 1439). It is also
possible that she was the daughter of a younger son of this family.

Should anyone have any relevant details concerning the Reresby
family and its relations, and also esp. re: whether the indicated
Judith Reresby was the mother of Richard Symmes' children, that
information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John

(Strafforth wapentake, Thrybergh parish) includes the following:

' Thomas de Reresby, Chiualer, & Alicia uxor ejus........ xx s. '
' Thomas, filius Thome de Reresby, Armiger.............. xl. d. '

The first is the Sir Thomas of the 1386 deposition; the next
is his eldest son and heir Thomas.
