Many thanks to all those who have contributed to this thread.
It seems probable that the family took its name from one of two
places called Burgh in Norfolk. CP 7:133 n.(a); Clarence Ellis,
_Hubert de Burgh_ pp. 188-90. If so, it seems that Moncreiffe
was wrong in thinking that the surname in French was originally
du Bourg, and the objection to "de Burgh" would disappear.
