Viking kings of Dublin & Jorvik

Legg inn av Mark Harry » 18 jan 2005 09:28:03

I have been looking at my notes on these kings, which have been
compiled from various secondary printed sources, and already it's
becoming clear that these contradict one another. I am therefore
having trouble working out the sequence and dates of these rulers, let
alone how they were related to each other. The problem seems to be
most acute in descriptions relating to the period 910-945 or
thereabouts.
For example, is the Ragnall of one book, who ruled from Jorvik in the
910s, one and the same man as the Rognvald of another, who is
described as raiding in or around Waterford and/or Dublin at the same
time. Are "Ragnall" and "Ragnar" different names, and hence different
people? Was Sihtric succeeded after 927 as king of Jorvik by his son
Olaf, with his brother Guthfrith as regent, or did Guthfrith succeed
Sihtric as king? Is there any way of distinguishing which Olav
(Guthfrithsson or Sihtricsson) is active in northern England in the
late 930s-early 940s. How many times was the latter king of York
and/or Dublin?
Can anyone can advise on these points, and/or point me in the
direction of a reliable source?
Thanks
Mark

The list and genealogical in volume 9 of the New History of Ireland
are reasonably good, keeping in mind that the primary sources for this
time are very difficult.

For example, is the Ragnall of one book, who ruled from Jorvik in the
910s, one and the same man as the Rognvald of another, who is
described as raiding in or around Waterford and/or Dublin at the same

Ragnall (Rognvaldr, Reginald) and Ragnar (Reginar, Reginherus) are
different names. However, there is no good evidence that the name
Ragnar ever appeared in the family of the kings of Dublin. The later
sagas are pretty much worthless as a source for the history of Dublin,
and the largely mythical Ragnar Lothbrok, to the extent (if any) that
he is based on real events, would appear to have gotten his name from
a viking who died in France in 845, and has no documentable connection
with Britain or Ireland, but might also be based in part on
individuals named Lothbrok and/or Ragnall.

Cogadh Gaedhel re Gallaibh ("War of the Gaedhil with the Gaill"),
edited by J. H. Todd (Rolls Series 48, London, 1867), has an appendix
discussing the Viking dynasties which is useful, but also now very
much out of date.
