Dear Group,
I've searched the archives but am unable to discover whether Rohese de
Foix, alleged daughter of Roger-Bernard, Count de Foix and Cecily
Trencavel, was the wife of Thomas le Despencer, (d. by 1218), father of
Hugh and Rohese le Despencer. Many online genealogies state that they
were married, but none cite any reputable sources. Does anyone here
know who the wife of Thomas was?
Many thanks,
Roger

Re: Rohese de Foix - wife of Thomas le Despencer?
CP IV:260, in a chart of the early Despensers, doesn't give a name for
Thomas le Despenser's wife and also gives no death date for Thomas.
Thomas's SON, Thomas, Brother of Hugh and Rohese, is given as dead by
1218, sine prole.
CP XIV doesn't add anything new to this chart.
So, you are right to be skeptical.

Thank you for verifying the lack of information in CP. The website I
was looking at may be found at the following:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bi ... &id=I04826
The author is usually quite good at citing reputable sources but -
tellingly perhaps - cites none for the marriage of Rohese and
Thomas.......and that in itself may be an important clue!
Best,
Roger

You're quite welcome.
I agree.
Will Larry Summers survive his alleged faux pas concerning gender
differences?
Cheers,

Thomas Farley of Jamestown; Sefton and Molyneux
Hello:
Does anyone know if the Thomas Farley of Jamestown, described in 1623 as
"of Worcester, Worstershire, gent." was the son or the brother of Roger
Farley, Gentleman, of Worcester?
Roger's will of 1622 names a brother Thomas, a sister, Alice Kent, and
children, Robert, William, Elliot, Edward, Thomas, Humphrey, Susanna
Ceycill, Mary Broadhurst, Jane Rogers, Katherine Barnsley, and his wife's
son, Robert Allen, wife's brethern Thomas and Edward Evans, son-in-law,
William Ceycill. Roger Farley's wife was named Jane. WIll printed in
Virginia Mag of Hist & Biog. v 20, pp 178-179.
What was the family name of Thomas Farley's wife? Several web sites give
her name as either Jane Sefton or Molyneux. Has anyone verified either
name or the identity of Jane, or of Thomas as son or brother of
Roger? Thomas of Virginia had servants who were indentured to Humphrey
Farley, Merchant of London.
There was a similar post in 1998 and one in 1999 with no responses in the
newsgroup archives.
Thanks,
Steven C. Perkins

I doubt there is any evidence that such a person as "Rohese de
Foix" ever existed. There are two questions here - first, was
the wife of Thomas named Rohese, and second, if so, to what
family did she belong? It should be kept clear that the topomyn
"de Foix" only applies to her if the speculated derivation is
correct (which I think highly unlikely).

Yes, as I suspected. Thanks to you and to Spencer for your replies.
