I recommend a scholarly little paperback, _My Ancestors Came with the
Conqueror_ by Anthony J. Camp. 89 pages. First pub. by Society of
Genealogists, London, 1988; corrected reprint, Genealogical Publishing
Co., Baltimore, 1990. [Note: pp. 26-89 are index]

The subtitle is "Those Who Did and Some of Those Who Probably Did Not."

Were there 315 knights who fought at the Battle of Hastings, 14th October
1066 (bronze tablet at Castle of Falaise in Normandy) -- or 15
"Companions" whose names could be accepted (Dr. T.R. Thomson) -- or 27
"Companions" (Prof. D.C. Douglas) -- or 19 (Geoffrey H. White)?

"The above quoted historians had no hesitation in rejecting the so-called
Battle Abbey Roll as a quite unreliable list of those present at the
Battle." There are several versions of the Battle Abbey Roll.

Cheers,
