[OT?] intelligent responses only please

Recently a message was sent to gen-med which included the request
"intelligent responses only". Among the responses received was one
disliked by the original sender, who nevertheless responded with a
complaint.

It seems to me that this is a public forum, and anyone has the right to
respond, whether you wish it or not. While it would be nice if all
postings and all responses were intelligent, I see no way of guaranteeing
this.

It seems to me if you have stated that you will only respond to other's
responses you judge intelligent, then when you respond you are indicating
you think the other response was intelligent, and it's then illogical to
complain it wasn't intelligent.

A request for source information is always an intelligent response.

When I am posting about a specific issue, I list my sources, even if
they aren't solid. (In fact, I may well be posting to find out how solid
my sources are.)

When I am posting about an extended lineage, I am more sparing with
source citations. I figure each link falls into one of three categories:
(1) nobody cares, (2) everyone already knows it and knows its sources, (3)
neither of those, in which case please inquire my sources. This is a sort
of triage system.
