blancheferme

I have come across the Latin expression alba firma, which I presume
translates as blancheferme, which means that the redendum or rent is
paid to the sheriff.

Please, can anyone firstly confirm the above and secondly explain the
reason why this was called alba firma.

Many thanks

The term simply meant that the rent was to be paid in money ("white" from
the paleness of silver coin) rather than in kind or by labour (in contrast
these were called "black" returns).
