Clues found in _List of Proceedings in the Court of Requests

Legg inn av starbuck95@hotmail.com » 14 jan 2005 23:27:57

I've noticed the following clues from lawsuits calendared in volume 21
of _Lists and Indexes_ (_List of Proceedings in the Court of
Requests_). There are more to be found, no doubt, as I only checked
the later years of Philip and Mary and a little more than half of the
reign of Elizabeth. In an attempt not to go blind and mad
simultaneously, I've only noted page numbers, not bundle and item
numbers. Most of the refs. are fairly obvious; two of them, however,
are somewhat obscure, but relate to _NEHGR_, 50:413:

October 1569. Wife Margaret late wife of Martin Frens of Dickleborowe.

Just in case some of the other refs. are obscurer than I thought--

1. Abington and Barnaby are ancestral to Rev. John-1 Davenport.

2. Oliver Thornton was an ancestor of Elizabeth (Haynes) Cooke of
Cambridge, Mass.

3. Chibnall v. Tappe may relate to the ancestry of Edmund-1 Tapp of
CT.

4. Jane Fletcher Fiske's article on the ancestry of the Eastons of
Rhode Island showed a connection to some Buttons at Lymington, Hants.,
I believe.

"Official List" of Conquerer's Companions?

Legg inn av Rick Eaton » 16 jan 2005 22:11:01

"On August 17, 1862, "an International Academic meeting inaugerated a list
of William's Companions."

Participating were Monsieur E Caumont, chairman of the French Archeological
Society, with the approval of Mgr. Didot, Bishop of Bayeux, Monsieur Renier,
Vicar of Dives, Copunt Foucher de Careil, member of the Conseil General,
Monsieur Arnet, Mayor of Dives, presiding.

Reportedly, in addition to the following list carved and installed at the
Church at Dives-sur-mer, two other lists have been carved -- one on the
flagstones of Battle Abbey in Hastings, another in the Chapel of Falaise
Château (Calvados).

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the list?

There is one member, an apparent ancestor of mine, who was not thought to
have been at Hastings but, rather to have followed with Hugh Montgommerie,
who was almost certainly "left" at home to man the fort and who was not
thought to be at Hastings either.

Has this list been more accurately updated? Can you provide a source?

I believe that it was Todd Famerie who, some time ago and tersely, called an
Olive Tree (gen site) list, "BOGUS." I don't know if this is the same list.

As I am pursuing the Montgommerie and Pantoul (Pantulph) dimensions, I will
appreciate your comments and corrections. No doubt others will appreciate
your contributions to this cause as well.

Why do you see this as unrelated? Unrelated to what? We do discuss history
as well as genealogy. I would love to have an acceptable list of William the
Q's companions at Hastings.

The postings about William the Conqueror's companions are showing up as
subheadings to the thread I started ("Clues found in List of
Proceedings in the Court of Requests")--at least in Google and the
Rootsweb archives. They *are* unrelated to that topic ...

My apologies. I don;t know why that is happening. However, for that posting,
I retitled a prior message, deleted the content and dubject and used the
reply mechanism for my own posting. The "electronics" must be more
sophisticated than I am although I have done this before without issue or
complaint.

Again, my apologies.

Unfortunately threading is best done by the message IDs not by the text
in the subject. You did nto delete the list of references in the
headers. So the threading takes its thread from the references that
were there.

Surely your software has the facility to generate a new Usenet posting?
What software are you using?

Yep, I think a lot of things have changed with the new system Google
has in place ...

When you cut off too much, how can anyone know/understand what the 'topic'
is?
Look at the header, that doesn't tell anything but Öfficial List of
Conquerer's companions

Was this really the best place to insert this (unrelated) topic?

This is a responce to what? If you reply at least allow the question to be
part of the message. This message as is means nothing to most. When people
change existing headings and remove the main message, how can others be
expected to know what it is all about?

The postings about William the Conqueror's companions are showing up as
subheadings to the thread I started ("Clues found in List of
Proceedings in the Court of Requests")--at least in Google and the
Rootsweb archives. They *are* unrelated to that topic ...

Don't trouble yourself over this, Leo. The person to whom it was
addressed understood it perfectly.
