An intriguing clue to William's parentage appeared in the most recent
issue of TAG 79 (2004):172-178. William may be a possible son of
Thomas and Mary (Dendy) Dudley. Mary Dendy is the daughter of John
and Margaret (Symons) Dendy, all of Dorking, co. Surrey. If so,
William had a brother Jasper.

Using this information, it can be seen that Thomas and Mary were
married about 1611. Mary was baptized at Dorking in October 1591.
Thomas Dudley was therefore born sometime before 1590. There are
several Thomas Dudleys born in the area at that time, several at
Dorking itself. However, one intriguing possibility that I would like
to quickly rule out, is the Thomas born to Robert Dudley, Earl of
Leicester, by Lettice Knollys at Richmond or Sheen or Shere in 1584 or
1586. I'm sure someone has done work on this already and can tell me
all about this Robert Dudley and his supposed children, both legitimate
and not.

Many thanks.

If you Robert Dudley and Lettice Knollys had had a son who grew up, this son
would have been Earl of Leicester. As it is their one and only son died very
young, so you can rule this possibility out.
