An encomium for genealogy

Well, it certainly didn't _sound_ as though you thought much to either
one of them ...
(never mind about getting their names spelled correctly).

Whatever gave you that idea? I was writing about one particular
manifestation of nuttiness that Rouse and Thiering had in common.
This was

not the sum total of either person's approach to learning, or the
contributions to it for which both are justly admired.

Reading more into a particular statement than was intended is one of
the
major problems that beset genealogy as well as history.

You're quite right this time, I don't mind about correct spelling - Rowse
and Rouse are practically the same to my impaired eyes & brain.

However, I do have a problem with some associative "sound" in other people's
minds being read back into what I write. If the hobby horses of admirable
historians should run away with them still clinging to the reins, as
happened to these two, such an unhappy turn of events doesn't reflect on
everything - or necessarily anything - else about their work. It can provide
some lasting comedy, of course, like John Gilpin's ride to the picnic.
