Talbot Query Revisited

Legg inn av Rick Eaton » 05 jan 2005 18:31:02

Dr. Joseph Cochoit (MD) is at once one of the most ardent and prudent
researchers of the Eyton-Eaton families, six of which (including that of New
Haven Colony Governor Theophilus) emigrated to Massachusetts in the early
1600s and that are believed to descend from the Eytons of Cheshire and/or
Eyton on the Weald Moor, Shropshire, England and hence from William
Pantulph/Pantulf/Pantoul/Pantoon, Baron of Wem, or his cadet, Warin,
viscount of Shropshire.

Other proven, probable or possible descendants of the ³original² Eyton and
Eatons can be found in Denbigshire in Wales, Ireland, Scotland (apparently),
Australia, New Zealand; throughout the UK and, as early emigrants, in New
Jersey and Virginia in the U.S.

In 2001, Cochoit posted a query that was most important to the study of
these lines but, from review of the archives the time, it appears that it
was never answered. Subsequently, many of the prominent list participants
entered into dialogues with Cochoit, but the original questions he posed do
not seem to have been answered at any time.

I take the liberty of repeating (via snippets) Joe Cochoits query in hopes
that more information about the Earls of Shrewsbury and their descendants
may have been revealed to researchers since 2001. Your responses will be
most appreciated.

Cochoit said, in part:

³In the Visitations of Shropshire taken in the Year 1635 I find in the Eyton
pedigree:

³Sir (Nicholas) Eyton de Eyton in co. Salop Sheriff (of Shropshire) in
1440
and 1449 miles Katherina filia John is Talbot in com. Salop Earl of
Salop

³I see in CP vol XI, p. 698:

³John Talbot cr. Earl of Salop but styled Earl of Shrewsbury (as are all
subsequent generations) b. c1384 d. 7/17/1453

³His son:

³John Talbot, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury, b. c1413 d. 7/10/1460, m.
bef. Mar. 1445 Eliz Butler

³His "1st son and h.

³John Talbot, 3rd Earl b. 1448

From these references, Cochoit concluded

³Katherine Talbot wife of Sir Nicholas Eyton must be the
daughter of John Talbot, cr. 1st Earl of Shrewsbury.

³In PA 2 by Faris p. 349 notes John Talbot had 3 sons by his 1st wife and 4
Sons and 2 daughters by his second.²

So, Cochoit asked:

³Can anyone confirm or give further references to confirm the link of
Katherine to John 1st Earl?

³Who are the 9 children mentioned by Faris? Is Katherine a daughter of
Wife #2 Margaret Beauchamp?

³ What does the "in com." following the name Joh¹s Talbot in com. Salop
Earl of Salop mean?²

Somewhat revising another question posed by Cochoit, I add this:

Have the 1623 Visitations of Shropshire been found to be any more than
others which have been found to be in question?

NOTE: Several Eyton/Eaton family members have suggested variously that
Katherine, like many female children simply may not have been recorded or
that she was illegitimate. I could easily speculate that, since the Eytons
were ³mere² knights and lords of their several manors, the marriage of an
illegitimate daughter to that family is plausible. Plausibility doesn¹t
count, however, and harder data is sought.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

This is short for 'in comitatis' - in the county of
