Dear Group,
The following documents from Cornwall RO, Arundell of Lanhearne and Trerice,
throw light on some of the questions raised by Louise Staley in her recent
posts:-
AR/1/55: the confirmation by Remfrey Arundel to his son Odo of the gift of
half an acre in Trehougenev (the deed mentioned by Louise as cited in Gen Coll)
AR/1/62: gift by Richard, Lord of Tremodrut, to Randulf de Arundel of land at
Trethreysu in free marriage with Evota his first-born daughter.
Richard's seal is that of "... de Rupe" i.e.Roche. Richard de la Roche or de
la Rupe was Lord of Tremodret:see AR/30/31
AR/1/69: deed between Roger Everard and Ralph de Arundel, identifying Remfrey
Arundel as Ralph's father
AR/1/79: deed between Sir Ralph Arundel and his brother Odo, confirming
various gifts by Remfrey Arundel to Odo (including AR/1/55), also confirming that
Remfrey was his father, and identifying Remfrey's mother as "Margaret" (not
Maud, as has been suggested).
I have found no evidence bearing on the identity of this Margaret.

As to the identity of Joan, wife and widow of John Arundel I, I share
Louise's doubts, and have not seen any evidence to identify her as a Sor or Soor of
Tolverne. I agree with Louise's observation that none of the lands held by
John's widow Joan in dower were Sor lands. But no contemporary Sor daughter could
have been an heiress, since all the 14th century Sor males had male
successors; so Louise's observation does not prove that Joan was NOT a Sor.
Happy New Year to the Group, especially to those who have kindly helped with
my enquiries, and to those who have successfully steered clear of the shoals
of mutual vituperation and irrelevance
MM
