More newsgroup problems
It seems to be getting well nigh impossible to be sure of seeing all the
posts to soc.genealogy.medieval, even leaving aside the perennial problems
with the GEN-MEDIEVAL gateway.
Douglas Richardson kindly copied to me his post entitled "Identity of
Margaret, wife of Henry le Tyeys & Thomas de Monthermer", which was
submitted via Google groups on 12 December (well over 24 hours ago).
I was puzzled not to see it on the newsgroup. I eventually did see some
replies, starting with Inger Johansson's earlier today.
Looking at Google, I can now see no fewer than 14 messages in this thread.
Via my ISP's newsgroup server (Freeserve), I can see only 4 messages. Using
another ISP's newsgroup server (BT) I can see only 2 messages. Using
Rootsweb's browsable archive, I can see the same 4 my normal ISP shows me!
It looks as though the "missing" messages were posted using Google, so maybe
there's something wrong with Google's connection with the rest of the world?
The two messages shown by one ISP but not the other looked as though they
had come from Rootsweb.

I went through exactly the same process. I thought it was a Google problem,
but on seeing your post I realised I am on Freeserve too. When I connected
through my alternative (Virgin) I found all the messsages were there. So
it's probably not a Google problem, just our ISPs losing some messages!

Thanks for that. If the messages show up on Virgin, I suppose it can't be a
problem with Google. But it's hardly reassuring that one of the UK's major
ISPs has missed so many messages, and that another (which used to be the
state-owned telephone company, for those that don't know) has missed nearly
all of them!

Another UK ISP, Demon, as at 9pm 13 December, is showing 16 messages in
this thread on the newsgroup. So it seems to be an ISP problem.

And yet the browsable Rootsweb archive is still showing only 4. It's very

This is a typical USENET propagation phenomenon. (I checked two
different university newsfeeds and they are both similar to
yours.) Usually when such a propagation problem occurs, the
problem is one of three things - a fluke of propagation, a
generic problem (one of the big USENET servers is down or
experiencing a DOS attack, and the messages are having a hard
time getting around the block) or a specific problem (such as the
fact that multi-crossposted messages like these will be blocked
by some servers), usually some combination of the three.
